Abstract: Acetalizing poly-, oligo-, di- saccharide or its derivative comprises dissolving the poly-, oligo or di saccharide in an ionic liquid and reacting the obtained mixture with a vinyl ether. Independent claims are included for: (1) acetylated cellulose obtained by the above method; (2) preparation of cross linked cellulose comprising dissolving the poly- or oligo- saccharide or its derivative, in at least an ionic liquid and reacting the obtained mixture with the vinyl ether and an acid; and (3) the cross linked cellulose obtained by the above method.
