    Abstract: A process for the production of 2-amino-pyrimidine comprises reacting proparglyaldehyde at temperatures of -10 DEG C. to +100 DEG C., preferably 0 DEG C. to 40 DEG C., with concentrated hydrochloric acid, the hydrogen chloride content of which it at least 20% by weight and is equal to at least 1 mole equivalent, preferably 3 to 6 mole equivalent, with reference to the amount of proparglyaldehyde, while agitating vigorously, the reaction mixture being allowed to react with guanidine or a salt of guanidine at temperatures between -10 DEG C. and +100 DEG C. The reaction with guanidine or a salt of guanidine is preferably carried out in the presence of a further condensing agent such as hydrobromic acid, sulphuric acid or additional hydrogen chloride. The proparglyaldehyde and hydrogen chloride initially react to produce an adduct which is not b -chloroacrolein. Examples are given, guanidine hydrochloride being used as the guanidine salt.
