    Abstract: Lithium production from aqueous solution, by lithium amalgam formation and use as a moving anode in an electrolysis cell, is new. Metallic lithium is produced from an aqueous lithium salt solution by forming a lithium amalgam from the solution and using amalgam as a moving anode in an electrolysis cell containing a lithium ion conductive solid electrolyte and a molten lithium cathode. Preferred Features: The lithium amalgam anode is moved by stirring and/or pumping under atmospheric or slightly elevate pressure. The amalgam is produced by chlor-alkali electrolysis.

    Abstract: Preparation of phthalides (I) involves reducing a phthalic acid compound (II) at the cathode of an electrolysis cell to cause a (II) conversion at a rate of 80-99.5%, followed by crystallizing (I) from the electrolyte. Preparation of phthalides (I) involves reduction of a phthalide compound (II), dissolved in an electrolyte, at the cathode of an undivided electrolysis cell. (II) is selected from phthalic acid and its derivatives in which the carboxy groups are replaced by groups derived from carboxy in a condensation reaction and/or one or more H atoms on the o-phenylene unit are replaced by inert substituents. Reaction is carried out to a conversion such that the molar ratio (I) : ((I) + (II)) is 0.8-0.995 : 1. The electrolyte is then removed from the cell, and (I) is crystallized from the electrolyte (optionally after distillation work-up) and separated from the mother liquor.
