Abstract: Prepn. of o-benzyltoluenes (I) by condens. of (II) with (III) (where R1, same or different, is H or halogen; R2 is as R1 or an aliphatic or aromatic radical) in the presence of H2SO4 or a mixt. of H3PO4 and an org. sulphonic acid RSO3H, opt. with cpds. contg. Zn, Sn, or B. Method is less hazardous, gives good yields without need if complicated catalysts, and shows consistent results. Cpds. (I) are inters. e.g. for dyestuffs.

Abstract: o-Benzyltoluenes of formula (I): (where R1 are each indep. H or halogen; R2 are each indep. H, halogen or aliphatic or aromatic gp.) are obtained by reacting o-sylylhalides of formula (II): (where X is halogen) with benzenes of formula (III): in the presence of HiSO4, using a mol. ratio of 7 mol. (III) per mol. (II). (I) are obtained in improved yields and purity (cf JA 40754/1973) from easily available starting materials, and are easily isolated from the reaction mixture. (I) are useful as dyestuffs intermediates and as starting materials in the prepn. of anthracene and anthraquinone and their derivs.; oxidn. with HNO3 yields o-benzoylbenzoic acid and its derivs.
