    Abstract: Isobutylene homo- and copolymers with olefinically unsatd. monomers are produced by polymsn. in liq. phase in a polymsn. zone at a pressure of 0.2-20 bar and at -130 to 60 deg.C, in the presence of (i) 0.01-20m Mole (on monomer) of a boron halide catalyst; (ii) a cocatalyst and opt. a polymsn. accelerator in a molar ratio of 0.5 boron halide:200 cocatalyst and opt. polymerisation accelerator; (iii) 0-90 wt.% inert solvent, and removing heat of polymsn. by cooling. The new feature is the use of a carboxylic acid anhydride or halide as the cocatalyst. Pref. the cocatalyst is a 4-18C aliphatic or aromatic opt. halogen substd. anhydride or a 2-12C carbonyl halide. Esp. trifluoroacetic, trichloroacetic, benzoic, phthalic, succinic, pivalic, maleic or (meth)acrylic anhydrides; acetyl fluoride, acetyl chloride, acetyl bromide, benzoyl chloride pivaloyl chloride or acryloyl chloride are claimed as co-catalyst.

    Abstract: Isobutylene polymers are prepared by polymerizing the monomers at from 0.2 to 20 bar and from -130 DEG and +60 DEG C. in the presence of from 0.01 to 20 mmol of a boron halide catalyst system which contains as cocatalyst a carboxylic anhydride or carbonyl halide, preferably an aliphatic or aromatic, unsubstituted or halogen-substituted C4-C18-carboxylic anhydride of C2-C12-carbonyl halide and where appropriate also a customary polymerization accelerant in customary amounts, in the presence or absence of an inert solvent with dissipation of the heat of reaction.
