[Also in Divisions B5, C7 and H1] Particles of Ti or W or of mixtures of these or of Ti-W alloys, mixed with 1-20% of particles of oxides, such as those of aluminium, zirconium or thorium, are applied to an article by a plasma spraying process to form a thin porous layer from which the article is then removed, the resulting layer-form being for use as a cathode in a fuel cell or electrochemical measuring cell. The shaping article may be of copper or iron, to be removed by nitric acid. It may be a tube, wire, sheet, coil or netting. The porosity of the cast cathode may be increased by including, in the sprayed mixture, substances such as copper, iron, zinc and alkaline earths which can be dissolved out after spraying. The plasma arc gases are argon and nitrogen. The cathode may finally be coated on one side with insoluble metal oxide as a porous layer and impregnated with ion-exchange material.

A nozzle suitable for spraying molten salts or metals comprises an inner nozzle member 2 connected to a supply conduit 5 for the spray material, and an outer nozzle member 1 insulated from the member 2 and provided with a chamber 22 which is supplied with cold compressed air by a conduit 21, the member 1 being connected to a source of high frequency current so that the nozzle is heated inductively to a temperature of about 1600‹C. The member 1 is disc-shaped and is slit radially, Fig. 2 (not shown), the adjacent sides of the slit being separated by insulating material (12). The conduit 21 enters the chamber 22 tangentially so that the molten discharge of spray material is atomized by a coaxial whirling discharge of air. The member 1 is preferably of copper and the air supplied by the conduit 21 is cold so that it cools the outer wall of the chamber 22.
