Abstract: Sepiolite, Mg4 (H2O)3(OH)2Si6O15 .xH2O, x being 1 - 3, which is otherwise free from water, is used in powder form, particle size 0.1 - 2,000 mu, is carrier for a Ziegler catalyst system consisting of (a) a Ti, Zr or V chloride, oxychloride or alkoxychloride, pref. TiCl4 and (b) a satd. alkyl, alkoxyalkyl of alkyl halide of Al, Mg or Zn, pref. Al, with the pref. organic components having 1 - 12C. The system is used to polymerise olefins, pref. 2 - 8C olefins, esp. ethylene, at 0 - 200 degrees C and under 0.1 - 200 atm. Yields per unit catalyst are increased, mol. wt. is regulatable with H2 and polymers with relatively low densities are obtained.
