[Also in Division H1] A binder for securing ferromagnetic particles to a substrate (see Division H1) comprises a mixture of (I) 60 to 99% by weight of a copolyamide of (a) 20 to 60% by weight of at least one lactam having more than six ring members and (b) 80 to 40% by weight of a mixture of at least one dicarboxylic acid having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, the latter mixture having at least one aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or diamine of 6 to 20 carbon atoms and represented by the formula in which Z denotes -CH 2 NH 2 or -COOH, R is an alkyl radical having at least 2 carbon atoms, R 2 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical having at least 2 carbon atoms and x and y each denote an integer from 1 to 5, and/or p,p 1 - diamino dicyclohexyl methane, the copolyamide being soluble in an organic solvent, and ((II) 40 to 1% by weight of a reaction product of formaldehyde and an aromatic compound having a phenolic hydroxy group and suitable for the formation of a phenolic resin. Numerous suitable lactams or corresponding amino acids are mentioned. Lists are given of compounds of the above general formula and of other C 6-20 dicarboxylic acids and diamines which may contain aliphatic or aromatic ring systems. The phenoplasts may be derived from phenol, cresols or naphthols and may be modified by conventional additives; in examples, the phenoplast comprises a polyester of 1 mole of trimethylol propane and 0.8 mole of adipic acid as modifier. Various solvents and optional additives are mentioned.

Abstract: Moulding material consisting of 99.5 to 70% by weight of polypropylene and 0.5 to 3.0% by weight of polyisobutylene, is made by homopolymerizing propylene and isobutylene mixed together in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkyl aluminium halide and a titanium halide. The molar ratio of halogen to aluminium in the alkyl aluminium supplied to the polymerization being from 1.1: to 1.9:1 and the molar ratio of aluminium to titanium being 10:1 to 1:3. The catalyst may be modified with complex-forming substances, and the polymerizable mix may include polymerization and molecular weight regulators. The polymers are recovered by known techniques.

Numerous examples are given where R is Me, Et, Pr, Bu, Ph, naphthyl, vinyl, dodecyl, octadecyl, octyl and mixtures thereof, and X is C1, (OBu), (OEt), (OH) and (NH 2 ). The compound may be added before, during, or after dispersion of the particles. The binder may be P.V.C., cellulose ester, polyurethane, polyamide, or polyester (examples given). The magnetic particles may be acicular γ-Fe 2 O 3 , and a layer 10Á thick may be produced, containing 0À5-5% of the particles.
