Abstract: A process for the distillative recovery of high purity monoethylene glycol from the hydrolysis, product of ethylene oxide by pressure dewatering, preferably in a battery, vacuum dewatering and subsequent purifying distillation, wherein during the vacuum dewatering an aqueous stream is withdrawn which contains-monoethylene glycol in a concentration below 1% by weight, preferably below 0.1% by weight, medium boilers and low boilers. The withdrawn aqueous stream is, optionally after further workup, removed from the system.

Abstract: Separation of glycol from a mixture of glycol, water and salt is carried out using a thin film evaporator. A process for the separation of glycols (I) from a mixture (II) of glycols, water and salt comprises: (A) evaporation of at least a partial amount of water and glycol from the mixture to form a salt free liquid or gaseous medium, (B) dewatering of the medium and (C) isolation of the glycols from the dewatered medium whereby step (A) is carried out in a thin film evaporator (35). Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the production of glycols by catalytic conversion of ethylene with oxygen to form a reaction mixture containing ethylene oxide, subsequent processing to form a glycol, water and salt containing liquid mixture (II) and separation using the thin film evaporator (35) (ii) a thin film evaporator (35) comprising a delivery tube (20) at the head for the salt free, glycol and water containing liquid or gaseous medium, a sump discharge (21), a supply feed (51), an inlet tube (53) for a rinse medium, two inlet tubes (54,55) for inert gas, a rinse take off (56), a discharge container (57), a collection container (58), discharge valve (60), rinse water valve (61), container discharge valve (62), rinse discharge valve (63) and degassing valve (64).

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the continuous production of an aqueous ethylene oxide solution by absorbing ethylene oxide from a gaseous mixture containing 1.5 to 4 mole percent, preferably 2.5 to 3 mole percent of ethylene oxide in the wash water in an absorber. The mixture drawn directly from the absorber has a water/ethylene oxide weight ratio of 5 to 20, preferably of 10 to 15. The absorbed mixture is especially useful for directly feeding it to a secondary reactor for the production of glycol.

According to the inventive method, the pressure dehydration column or at least the first pressure dehydration column of the cascade (2, 3, 4) has a stripping section with at least one separation stage, preferably 2-10 separation stages, especially 3- 6 stages, and in that part of the top flow of the dehydration column(s) (2, 3, 4) is sluiced out with the stripping section.
