Abstract: 1,137,545. Bitumen, ethylene copolymer, and polyisobutylene compositions. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 13 April, 1966 [14 April, 1965], No. 16134/66. Headings C3N and C3P. [Also in Division B2] A moulding material contains in parts by weight: (A) bitumen, 30-99; (B) ethylene copolymer, 0À5-69À5 ; (C) polyisobutylene, 0À5-30; the total of (A), (B) and (C) being 100 parts by weight. Bitumen (A) has Pen 1-210, and may be a high vacuum bitumen Pen 5-11 or a blown bitumen Pen 5-45. Copolymer (B) is of 30-97% wt. ethylene and 70-3% wt. vinyl and/or acrylic and/or methacrylic ester, and may be prepared by highpressure polymerization at > 1000 atmos, or by aqueous solution or emulsion polymerization at 100-400 atmos. Exemplified esters are: vinyl acetate and propionate, and alkyl acrylates and methacrylates, the alkyl group containing 1-10 atoms, e.g. methyl, propyl, isobutyl, cyclohexyl, 2-ethylhexyl acrylates and methacrylates. Polyisobutylene (C) has M.W. 1000-200,000. The material may also contain fillers or mineral particles, e.g. wood flour, carbon black, diatomaceous earth, kaolin, quartz powder, stone chippings, sand, asbestos, glass fibres, mineral wool, rubber powder, wool felt, jute, or synthetic fibres, forming 5-80% wt. of the whole material. The material may be spread, trowelled, or poured in the molten state on a surface which may have been primed with, e.g. bitumen emulsion. The material may be extruded or moulded; moulded articles may be joined by moistening the surface with solvents or by superficial fusion. Articles may also be coated by dipping, by whirl sintering or by flame-spraying.

Abstract: Road edging members, particularly kerbstones, are made of moulding material containing, by weight, (a) 4-10% bitumen, (b) 0.5-5% of one or more olefine polymers, and (c) 85-94% of a mineral filler mixture consisting, in per cent by weight of filler, of: hardstone chippings, 40-60; stone dust, 7-25; and sand, 30-50. Suitable bitumens (a) have penetration 10-200, and R and B softening point of 37-175 DEG C. Suitable olefine polymers (b) are homopolymers and copolymers of mono-olefines and di-olefines having 2-5 C atoms, e.g. ethylene, propylene, but-l-ene, isobutylene, butadiene and isoprene. Exemplified polymers are polyethylene, atactic or thermally degraded isotactic polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymers containing 40-60% by weight of ethylene units, polyisobutylene, synthetic rubber and copolymers of ethylene with vinyl esters of organic acids and/or acrylic compounds and/or methacrylic compounds. The olefine polymers may have M.W. of e.g. 20,000-200,000. Natural rubber may also be used. Suitable mineral fillers (c) include chippings of mean diameter 2-18 mm., sand of mean diameter 0.09-2 mm., dusts of mean diameter 0.001-0.09 mm., and fibres, e.g. hard-stone, basalt, quartz, slate dust, asbestos, and glass. Up to 25% by weight, based on the mineral filler, of organic fillers, e.g. wood fibres or granulated cork, may be present. Joints between members may be filled with composition containing by weight 30-95% bitumen of penetration 10-210 and 5-70% of a copolymer of 30-97% ethylene and 70-3% vinyl esters or esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid. The members may be extruded or moulded.

Abstract: Moulding material contains 30-95% bitumen and 5-70% of an ethylene copolymer. The bitumen has penetration 10-210 and may have R and B softening point of 37-72 DEG C., and may be asphaltic bitumen, petrolene, malthene, asphaltene or pyrobitumen, natural or obtained by petroleum distillation. The ethylene copolymer is of 30-97% ethylene and 70-3% vinyl ester or esters and/or copolymerizable acrylic and/or methacrylic compounds. Such compounds may be acrylic or methacrylic acids and their esters, and amides and nitriles which may bear substituents on the N atom. Many examples are given. Other ethylenically unsaturated compounds exemplified may additionally be present in the copolymer. The copolymers used have melt indices of 0.1-100. The moulding material may be applied molten to surfaces which are preferably preheated and which may be primed, e.g. with bitumen emulsion. Fillers, e.g. wood flour, carbon black, diatomaceous earth, kaolin, quartz powder, stone chips, sand, glass fibres, mineral wool, rubber powder, wool felt, jute, or synthetic fibres, may be present. A composition may contain, e.g. 5-70% by weight, with reference to bitumen and copolymer, of filler of particle diameter 0.01-0.09 mm.; or there may be present, with reference to the total weight of the composition, e.g. 4-10% bitumen, 2-10% copolymer, 6-20% mineral filler of particle diameter 0.01-0.09 mm., and 60-88% of mineral filler of particle diameter of 0.09-20 mm.
