Abstract: Photosensitive recording materials which are suitable for the production of printing plates and relief plates and possess a photopolymerizable relief-forming layer which can be developed with water and is based on a polyvinylalcohol/monomer mixture contain, as a binder in the said layer, a polyvinylalcohol derivative which is obtained by reacting polyvinylalcohol with an acylating agent which has groups which are polymerizable by free radicals, the reaction being carried out in the heterogeneous phase, in an aprotic dispersant, using the acylating agent in an amount which corresponds to not less than twice the molar amount required to achieve the desired degree of acylation.

Abstract: For coating printing cylinders or sleeves with a seamless, smooth photosensitive layer, two or more strata of a thin, prefabricated, essentially solvent-free, unsupported, thermoplastically processible, solid, photosensitive layer are applied to the printing cylinder or the sleeve, without bubbles and with displacement of the air between the individual strata, and the total photosensitive layer material is then heated under pressure and with joining or fusion of the individual strata to form a single, continuous photosensitive layer, and the surface of the resulting photosensitive layer is aftertreated to shape it exactly to size and is smoothed, with formation of an exactly cylindrical shape.

Abstract: A process for sealing cavities or interstices which are formed on fixing printing plates to a cylinder. The process employs a pasty, light-curable sealing compound composed of at least one photopolymerisable, ethylenically unsaturated low-molecular-weight compound (a), at least one polymeric binder (b) which is compatible with the photopolymerisable low-molecular-weight compounds of the component (a), at least one photopolymerisation initiator (c) and at least one finely divided oxidic filler (d) which, when mixed with the components (a) to (c), yields mixtures which are transparent to long wave UV light. Said sealing compound is cured after being applied by exposure to light and can be finally processed mechanically.

Abstract: Acylphosphine compounds of the formula I where X is oxygen, sulfur or an electron pair, R1 is R4 or OR4, R2 is -OM, where M is a monovalent cation, R3 is aryl which is substituted at least at the two positions ortho to the carbonyl group, and R4 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, are very effective photoinitiators for photopolymerizable materials, such as coating compositions, finishes, printing inks, unsaturated polyesters, recording media and preferably aqueous polymer dispersions or solutions.
