A tube mill comprises a motor-driven casing mounted at both ends and subdivided into compartments 14 . . . 18 by partitions 10 . . . 13. Premixed feed, e.g. y iron oxide in a binder solution for making recording tape, is introduced via a pipe 22 together with a gas current via a tube 24 into the grinding chamber, which is charged with balls, and is forced, at a pressure from 10-500 Kg. per sq. m., by the gas current through openings 21 in the middle of the partitions. The gas current, measured by a flowmeter 25, is saturated in a container 26 with the vapour of the liquid used in the grinding. The partitions may be pierced by slots (Fig. 2) or each provided with a hole, covered by mesh finer than the diameter of the balls (Fig. 3).
