Abstract: PREPARATION OF COPOLYMER DISPERSIONS HAVING A NARROW PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION, AND EXHIBITING DILATANT FLOW OVER A BROAD RANGE OF CONCENTRATIONS A process for the preparation of copolymer dispersions having a narrow particle size distribution, and exhibiting dilatant flow over a broad range of concentrations, by emulsion copolymerization of from 1 to 10 percent by weight, based on total monomers, of .alpha.,.beta.-mono-olefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids and/or dicarboxylic acids with other mono-olefinically unsaturated monomers and with from 0 to 5 percent by weight of polyolefinically unsaturated monomers in the presence of conventional emulsifiers, dispersants and polymerization initiators, and in the presence or absence of regulators, wherein the monomers are copolymerized in aqueous emulsion, with simultaneous agglomeration but only partial fusion of the initially formed polymer particles, at a temperature near the glass transition temperature of the copolymer formed, and thereafter A) the copolymer content of the aqueous copolymer dispersion is brought to 35 to 55 percent by weight an the pH to 3 to 5, or B) the water contained in the aqueous copolymer dispersion is entirely or partially replaced by a watermiscible liquid which does not dissolve or swell the copolymer.

Abstract: Coloured copolymers used in the sizing of textile materials comprise (a) 72 parts of ethyl acrylate, 10 parts of acrylamide, 7 parts of acrylic acid, 5 parts of methyl methacrylate and 6 parts of a dye having the formula which has been neutralized with caustic soda solution or (b) 70 parts of ethyl acrylate, 7 parts of methyl acrylate, 10 parts of acrylamide, 7 parts of acrylic acid and 6 parts of a dye having the formula which has been neutralized with caustic soda solution, the parts being by weight.ALSO:Yarns, filaments and threads of all types, e.g. of viscose rayon, cellulose acetate, polyesters, cotton, wool, polypropylene or polyacrylonitrile, are sized with a water-soluble film forming addition polymer which is combined with a dye by a covalent bond. Solubility in water is defined as the ability to form true or colloidal solutions with water. The coloured polymers which may subsequently be removed by washing may be water-soluble copolymers of olefinically unsaturated polymerisable colourless compounds and dyes bearing vinyl groups or water-soluble homopolymers or copolymers of olefinically unsaturated polymerisable colourless compounds which by virtue of reactive groups are combined with dyes which bear reactive groups. Water soluble copolymers prepared from (a) azo dyes or anthraquinone dyes which bear a vinyl group, of which numerous examples are given, as the coloured monomers, (b) water soluble monomers, e.g. acrylic, methacrylic, maleic or fumaric acids or their alkali metal or ammonium salts or amides, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl ethers, and 2-vinyl pyridine, N-vinyl-imidazole and 2-aminoethyl acrylate and salts and quaternisation products thereof, and optionally (c) monomers which form water-insoluble homopolymers, e.g. esters of acrylic, methacrylic, maleic or fumaric acid, acrylonitrile, vinyl esters, p vinyl or vinylidene chloride, styrene, butadiene, ethylene and propylene, may be used, the proportion of coloured monomer preferably being 1-8% by weight. Alternatively the coloured polymer may be prepared from a polymer formed from monomers which bear reactive groups which do not react under the conditions of the polymerisation, e.g. monomers having methylolamide groups and lower ethers thereof such as N-methylol acrylamide, and dyes bearing complementary reactive groups, e.g. carbamoyl groups or chlorine atoms, examples of which are given. The term "dye" is intended to include compounds which are exclusively or mainly absorbent and fluorescent in ultra-violet light.
