Abstract: In producing liquid formulations of (quaternized) bis(2-(piperazinyl- or omega-amino-(hetero)alkoxy- or -(hetero)alkylamino-carbonyl)phenylazo)-1,3-dihydroxy- or -alkoxy-benzenes (I) by diazotizing 2-substituted aniline (II), coupling with the 1,3-dihydroxy- or -alkoxy-benzene (III) and optionally adding solubilizing additives. A process for preparing liquid formulations of dyes of formula (I) comprises diazotizing an amine of formula (II), coupling with a compound of formula (III) and optionally adding solubilizing additives. The acid pH for diazotization is regulated with pure methanesulfonic acid (IV) or not less than 20 mole-% mixtures of (IV) in monobasic acid. Y = Cl or Br; Z = H, Cl, Br, sulfonic ester, nitro or (substituted) sulfamoyl; X = -O- or -N(R4)-; R = alkylene, optionally with O, piperazin-1,4-diyl or -N(R5)- in the chain; m = 1 or 2; n = 0 or 1; p = 0, 1 or 2; An- = the equivalent of an anion; R1, R2 = H or (substituted) alk(en)yl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl; or NR1R2 = a heterocycle; R3 = H or (substituted) alkyl; B, R5 = H or 1-4C alkyl; B1 = H, OH, 1-4C alkoxy or 1-4C alkyl; R4 = (substituted) alkyl; and X-R-NR1R2(R3)n+n may also = (substituted) piperazinyl.
