Abstract: 1406776 Container closures BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc 20 Feb 1973 [22 Feb 1972] 8261/73 Heading B8T A closure device for a solution container has a resilient plug 12 with passages 14, 16 for communication with the interior of a bottle 18. An inner cap 26 with a cut away portion (34), Fig. 4 (not shown), and a flange 30 is secured to the bead 28 to hold a resilient disc 24 against the ridge 22 of the plug 12 to provide a sterile pressure seal about the underside of the disc 24. An outer cap 36, which is also secured to the bead 28, has a flange 38 which presses a malleable disc 40 against the resilient disc 24 and plug 12. An annular rib 42 on the disc 40 provides a circular high pressure seal against the disc 24 and this serves as a contamination barrier and facilitates sterilization of the space 44. The outer cap 36 has an opening tab (48) and lines of weakness (52), Fig. 1 (not shown). The closure is opened by tearing off the cap 36 and removing the disc 40. The resilient disc 24 is hen pulled through the cut away portion (34) to expose apertures 14, 16 in the plug 12. Alternatively, because of the additional sterile field on top of the resilient disc 24, the latter may be punctured to gain access to the apertures without risk of contamination.

Abstract: 1,252,381. Blood containers. BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc. 23 Feb., 1970 [17 March, 1969], No. 8604/70. Heading A5R. [Also in Division B8] A sealed collapsible bag contains blood or parenteral solutions and comprises a tubular body of flexible plastics sealed at one end and narrowing to an integral tubular neck portion 22 at the other end, a head portion 24 integral with the neck portion and sealing the other end, and a recess 26 in the head portion 24 to receive a needle for example with an off-centre point, to puncture the bag to withdraw the liquid. The recess may have a sleeve 30. There may be a second recess so that several bags may be connected in series or so that medicaments may be added. A rubber cap may be placed over each sleeve to keep it sterile. A handle in the form of a ring may be connected to the bag at the opposite end to the recesses. The bag is formed by inflating an extended tube in a mould, adding the liquid and sealing the ends.
