Vinyl acetate is prepared by reacting ethylene with acetic acid and oxygen in the gaseous phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst containing palladium metal and one or more alkali metal salts, e.g. acetates or compounds which can form alkali metal acetates under the reaction conditions. The process is continuous and a small quantity of one or more alkali metal salts is added continuously or intermittently to one or more of the reactants so that the composition of the palladium carrier catalyst (i.e. noble metal, alkali metal acetate and carrier) is kept constant and optimal. The addition of the alkali metal compound preferably in the form of a solution, to the reactant or reactants may be accomplished by passing the latter partly or entirely in the gaseous form through a solution of alkali metal compound or through layers of solid bodies impregnated with alkali metal compounds.

    Abstract: Small amounts of 4C-acetylenes are removed from liquid 4-C-hydrocarbon fractions containing 1-3-butadiene by selective hydrogenation in trickling phase in presence of Pd catalyst on carrier containing is not 20 wt. % Li-Al spinel, initially at 15-25 deg.C. and finally at 35-45 deg.C. Better selectivity and lower sensitivity to S than when Al2O3 is used as carrier. Catalyst contains 0.05-2, pref. 0.1-1 wt.% Pd and is not 20, possibly 40 wt.% or more spinel, with BET surface area 10-100, pref. 20-60 m.2/g. and average pore dia. 200-800 A.

    Abstract: Acetic acid is produced by a process in which, in a first stage, one or more n-butenes are converted by means of acetic acid into secondary butyl acetate in the presence of an acid catalyst, and, in a second stage, the secondary butyl acetate is subjected to an oxidation reaction with oxygen to form acetic acid, part of the acetic acid produced resulting from the oxidation of the secondary butyl radical. The oxidation is preferably carried out at 150 DEG to 250 DEG C. under a pressure of 30 to 100 atmospheres, and preferably the heat of reaction generated during the oxidation reaction is taken up by the reaction product which is recycled to the oxidation reactor over a cooling system.
