    Abstract: A process has been invented for the preparation of pyrocatechol and hydroquinone which comprises reacting a solution which is substantially anhydrous and free from hydrogen peroxide, of a percarboxylic acid in an inert, organic solvent, with phenol at temperatures from -10 DEG C. to 80 DEG C. The compounds obtained according to the invention are known, important industrial chemicals which are used in large amounts in the field of photography and of dyestuffs and plastics and in the field of scents and flavorings.

    Abstract: 1363916 Percarboxylic acids BAYER AG 29 July 1971 [1 Aug 1970] 35735/71 Heading C2C A percarboxylic acid or a solution thereof is prepared by reacting a carboxylic acid or anhydride with dilute aqueous hydrogen peroxide containing a phosphorus compound of the formula wherein, X, Y, Z may be the same or different and represent an oxygen group, an N-C 1 -C 6 alkyl, or an N-C 4 -C 7 cycloalkyl group, m, n and p represent 0 or 1, R 1 , R 2 , R 3 which may be the same or different represent straight chain or branched C 1 -C 6 alkyl, or C 4 -C 6 cycloalkyl optionally substituted with halogen, OH-, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, CN, or phenyl; or one or more of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 may represent phenyl radical optionally substituted with halogen, OH, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, carbo-C 1 -C 3 alkoxy or CN; R 1 together with R 2 or R 1 together with R 3 or R 2 together with R 3 may represent an alkylene radical so that either a 5- to 7-membered heterocyclic ring which contains 3 hetero atoms or a 5- to 7- membered ring which contains phorphorus, and optionally an inert diluent. The water present is optionally removed partially or completely and the mixture is reacted with the carboxylic acid and/or anhydride at from - 20 to 100‹ C. and the water removed and the product isolated. Examples describe the perparation of peracetic and perpropionic acids in the presence of dimethyl ester of methane phosphonic acid, #-cyanoethyl phosphonic acid, triethyl phosphate, hexamethyl phosphonic acid triamide, tetramethyl methane phosphonic acid diamide, 1-methyl-1-oxophospholane, and 1 -methoxy- 1 - oxophospholane. Lists of suitable phosphorus compounds are included.

    Abstract: A crude hydrocarbon mixture containing isoprene and isobutene in addition to formaldehyde monomer and polymers, such as is obtained by cracking 4,4-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane, is subjected to distillation in a column which is supplied near its head with liquid water, fouling of the column thereby being reduced and the distillate being obtained in higher purity.
