Abstract: An improved catalytic reactor system and method for removing interferents such as reactive hydrocarbons from the gas being sampled by gas component determination apparatus is disclosed. The sample from which the interferents are to be removed is blended with ozonized air and saturated to at least 15% with water vapor. The mixture is then passed through the catalytic reactor which, preferably, contains a mixture of platinum oxide mixed with and and maintained at an operating temperature of 200 to 280.degree.C. Additional catalytic mixtures which may be employed in the reactor are also disclosed. Methods of preventing the poisoning of catalytic reactors and rejuvenating poisoned catalytic reactors are also disclosed.

Abstract: 1360527 Preparation of nitric oxide BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc 27 March 1972 [2 July 1971] 14210/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division G1] Nitrogen dioxide is converted to nitric oxide by maintaining the nitrogen dioxide substantially at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature within the range 40‹ C. to 130‹ C., and exposing the nitrogen dioxide to ultraviolet radiation, whereby the nitrogen dioxide is converted to nitric oxide. The radiation preferably has a wavelength within the range 1849Š to 6600Š and more preferably within the range 1849Š to 4070Š. The process can be used as a method of quantitatively measuring the presence of nitrogen dioxide in a gas comprising converting the nitrogen dioxide to nitric oxide as described above, reacting the nitric oxide with ozone and measuring the light emitted by the reaction.

Abstract: The concentration of ozone in a gas sample, such as ambient air, can be quantitatively measured by contacting the gas sample with an organic polymer having a backbone chain consisting of carbon atoms to produce a chemiluminescent reaction and measuring the intensity of light emitted by the reaction. The polymer undergoes no apparent chemical change, indicating that it functions as a catalyst in the chemiluminescent reaction.

Abstract: 1353956 Electro-chemical analysis BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc 16 Sept 1971 [2 Oct 1970] 43162/71 Heading G1N The invention relates to an electro-chemical cell having a membrane type reference electrode, for measuring the pH of aqueous solutions containing organic liquids e.g. benzene which tend to form an insulating layer on the permeable membrane. To prevent this a SURFACTANT is added to the sample solution and/or the internal electrolyte of the reference electrode. Non-ionic or anionic surfactants are preferred. Cationic surfactants have been found unsatisfactory in that they tend to increase pH readings. Ethoxylates of isomeric linear alcohols, and alkyphenyl ethers of polyethylene glycol have been used. Examples are given. The membrane may be P. T. F. E., polyethylene or P.V.C.

Abstract: A method of analyzing nitric oxide (NO) in a gas stream containing nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and a scrubber apparatus for selectively removing nitrogen dioxide from a gas stream containing nitric oxide. The scrubber apparatus comprises a container having an inlet port for the gas stream and an outlet port. The scrubber material in the container includes silver carbonate whereby the scrubber has an efficiency of at least about 99% and a capacity of about 11.5 parts per million hours of 99% nitrogen dioxide removal per gram of silver carbonate. The method involves passing the gas stream through a scrubber material containing silver carbonate so as to remove nitrogen dioxide from the gas stream while passing the nitric oxide unattenuated and thereafter conveying the gas stream from the scrubber material to an analyzer for nitric oxide. The gas stream is analyzed with the analyzer to determine the nitric oxide concentration therein.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for converting nitrogen dioxide to nitric oxide for the ultimate reaction with ozone to cause a chemiluminescent reaction, the intensity of which is a function of the nitric oxide concentration. The method comprises passing the nitrogen dioxide through a small, confined volume and applying concentrated heat to the volume in the presence of suitable amounts of vitreous carbon. In one preferred embodiment the apparatus includes a quartz container and a filament constructed of vitreous carbon. In an alternative embodiment, loose vitreous carbon or a vitreous carbon rod is confined within the quartz container, and heat is applied by a heated stainless steel or nichrome filament surrounding the quartz container.
