Abstract: A static transfer system includes a first switch for connecting a normally used AC source to a lead and a second switch for connecting a standby source to the lead. A sensor is connected to an AC sine wave reference source for comparing at every instant of time the normal AC sine wave signal to the reference source signal and feeding an error signal to a logic circuit at any instant in time when the normal source signal falls below the reference signal. The logic circuit is effective to instantaneously connect the load to the standby source and disconnect the load from the normal source irrespective of the load power factor, and to reconnect the load to the normal source and disconnect the standby source from the load when the normal source is again capable of handling the load.

Abstract: A HIGH-POWER DC-TO-DC CONVERTER (OR "CHOPPER") SYSTEM PROVIDES AN INPUT VOLTAGE V1 OF SUBSTANTIALLY CONSTANT LEVEL TO A CHOPPER WHICH INCLUDES A SWITCH. THE OPENED AND CLOSED TIMES OF THE SWITCH ARE CONTROLLED TO PASS AN OUTPUT VOLTAGE VO OF VARIABLE MAGNITUDE THROUGH A FILTER TO A LOAD. A CONTROL CIRCUIT IS CONNECTED TO ACTUATE THE CHOPPER OVER A VARIABLE FREQUENCY RANGE, AND PRACTICAL OPERATING CONDITIONS SUCH AS HEATING OF THE SWITCH IMPOSE AN UPPER LIMIT ON THIS FREQUENCY RANGE. THE CHOPPER IS OPERATED SUCH THAT THE OUTPUT VOLTAGE VO IS ONE-HALF THE INPUT VOLTAGE VI AT THE MAXIMUM OPERATING FREQUENCY OF THE CHOPPER. Abstract: VOLTAGE CONTROLLED, INVERTER-MOTOR SYSTEM A relatively simple inverter-motor system, comprising a minimum number of circuit components, is provided by employing a voltage-controlled thyristor inverter (65,111) which in turn drives a synchronous motor (81) having a leading power factor. With the motor current leading the motor voltage, the thyristor switching devices (71-76,114-119) will be motor-commutated, thereby precluding the need for any auxiliary commutating elements or circuits to effect forced commutation. Since, with a leading power factor, the current through a conducting thyristor falls to zero before the thyristor has to be switched off, ample turn-off time is provided. Furthermore, as compared to a conventional forced commutated voltage source inverter, the customary reactive diodes, usually shunting the switching devices in an inverter to permit the flow of reactive motor current, are not necessary. Moreover, by powering the inverter with a voltage source (51,62,63,110), rather than with a current source, the commutation process is greatly facilitated, the need for damper windings on the motor is eliminated, and the physical size of the d-c link inductor normally required by a current source inverter is greatly reduced.

Abstract: A bipolar inverter has power switches connected such that the inverter can be energized with a d-c voltage of either polarity, or by an a-c voltage. Power switches are provided, each having a pair of load connections and a pair of switching connections, each power switch having one of its load connections coupled to a bus conductor. The other load connections of the switches are coupled to the load conductors to supply unidirectional energy to the load conductors. Each power switch of the bipolar arrangement can include inverse-parallel connected thyristors, an individual triac, or a diode bridge with a thyristor connected across the bridge. A commutation circuit for a bipolar inverter is described. A single power switch also has utility as a power transfer component in addition to its use with an additional power switch in one leg of a bipolar inverter. Different circuit implementations for the bipolar inverter are described, including use with an induction generator, a heterodyne frequency converter, and a power regeneration system.

Abstract: A first control system includes a chopper (dc-to-dc converter) for passing part of an input voltage Vi through a filter to provide an output voltage Vo for energizing an inverter. A controller regulates the operation of the semiconductor switch in the chopper by providing an output signal which is a function both of a first input signal derived from the input circuit that supplies the input voltage Vi to the chopper, and of a second input signal derived from a reference member. In a second system the reference voltage input to the controller is replaced by an error voltage provided by a comparator. The comparator receives both the reference voltage signal and a second signal related to the output voltage Vo of the chopper-filter combination.

Abstract: STARTING SYSTEM FOR CHOPPER CONTROLLED MOTOR-COMMUTATED THYRISTOR INVERTER If the thyristor switching devices of a chopper controlled inverter are normally motor-commutated during running operation, a starting system is needed to initially rotate the motor fast enough to develop a sufficient back EMF in the motor for motor commutation to occur. This is achieved by regulating the operation of the chopper (16) to produce bus current pulses and by gating the thyristors (31-36) on in predetermined sets and in a prescribed sequence to current pulse energize the motor (41) to effect step-by-step rotation thereof, namely to crank or turn the motor one step at a time. After a set of conducting thryistors have supplied a bus current pulse to the motor, the reactive energy that builds up and becomes locked or stored in the inductances (such as the motor inductance), through which the motor current flows, must be dissipated in order to commutate the conducting thyristors off and reduce the motor current to zero before the next set of thyristors are turned on. The required energy dissipation is accomplished by a circuit path which is effective during the intervals between the bus current pulses from the chopper. A d-c voltage source, which may comprise a resistor (53) and a parallel connected capacitor (54), in the circuit path causes the reactive energy to be rapidily absorbed, thereby minimizing the decay time of the motor current to zero at the termination of each current pulse to permit faster turn on of the next set of thyristors and consequently faster starting. Once the motor has reached a speed sufficiently high to permit motor commutation to occur, an SCR is gated on to by-pass the d-c voltage source and provide a low loss free-wheeling path for reactive energy during running operation of the system.
