A method for determining the approximate value of the internal porosity of a powder is set forth wherein a quick determination is achieved by measuring the maximum drawing force of an object such as a plate being withdrawn from within a bed of the powder, and repeating the removal of the object at least one additional time from a more compacted powder bed and utilizing the values obtained to solve simultaneous equations. The process is particularly suitable with regard to determining the internal porosity of polyvinyl chloride powders.

Polyolefin based sealing element compositions with good oxygen barrier properties particularly suitable for forming sealing elements, for example gaskets and cap liners that are especially useful for sealing containers having products such as liquids or food-stuffs therein. The compositions when formed as sealing elements do not appreciably contribute taste and/or odor to a packaged product including the sealing element. The compositions have desirable rheological properties and are thus readily processable at various temperatures.

In particular, the retort liners are thermoplastic elastomers formed from compositions including one or more styrenic block copolymers, one or more polyolefins and a softener. In a preferred embodiment, the retortable containers are all plastic packages, wherein the bottle or jar and the closure are thermoplastic compositions and the liner is a thermoplastic elastomer composition.

Soft flame retardant thermoplastic compositions that are preferably halogen free and include a styrenic block copolymer having a low modulus, one or more of a polyolefin polymer or copolymer and an acrylate containing polymer or copolymer, one or more of a softener and plasticizer, an inorganic phosphorous-containing flame retardant, and optionally but preferably, a platelet filler such as a nanoclay or an organic modified clay. In a preferred embodiment, the phosphorous-containing flame retardant has a surface coating thereon which reduces sensitivity of the flame retardant to water, and thus reduces the amount of the flame retardant that can leach out in the presence of water, thereby enabling the compositions of the present invention to be utilized outdoors or other environments where exposure to water or high humidity is possible. The hardness of the compositions according to the invention preferably ranges from about Shore A 40 to about Shore A 90. The compositions exhibit high char formation upon burning and also desirable vertical burn characteristics.

Abstract:
A compatibilizer including a first portion compatible with a fluoropolymer and a second portion compatible with a polyolefin. Compatibilized compositions comprising a polyolefin, a fluoropolymer, and a compatibilizer are also disclosed. Methods for forming both the compatibilizer and the blends contained in the compatibilizer are described. The compatibilized compositions of the present invention exhibit desired mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation. The flame retarded compatibilized blends exhibit desirable dielectric properties, are flame resistant and exhibit low smoke emission.
