Abstract: There is disclosed a process for the preparation of a polyisobutyl hydroxyaromatic compound wherein the polyisobutyl substituent has an average molecular weight in the range of 400 to 5000, which comprises alkylating a hydroxyaromatic compound in the presence of an alkylation catalyst with a suitable polyisobutene containing at least 70% of a methyvinylidene isomer.

Abstract: A fuel additive composition comprising: (a) a poly(oxyalkylene) hydroxyaromatic ester having the formula: or a fuel-soluble salt thereof; where R1 and R2 are each independently hydrogen, hydroxy, lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or lower alkoxy having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R3 and R4 are each independently hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R5 is hydrogen, alkyl having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, phenyl, aralkyl or alkaryl having 7 to 36 carbon atoms, or an acyl group having the formula: -?-R6 or where R6 is alkyl having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, phenyl aralkyl or alkaryl having 7 to 36 carbon atoms, R7 and R8 are each independently hydrogen, hydroxy, lower having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or lower alkoxy having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; n is an integer from 5 to 100; and x and y are each independently an integer from 0 to 10; and (b) an aliphatic amine having at least one basic nitrogen atom and containing a hydrocarbyl group which has sufficient molecular weight and carbon chain length to render the aliphatic amine soluble in hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline or diesel fuel range.
