Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for applying fitments onto packages. The present invention includes the steps of: applying an adhesive to a fitment (26); allowing the adhesive to solidify; introducing the fitment to a fitment applicator machine; conveying the fitment to a heating station where the adhesive is reactivated (34); providing mechanical means for picking up a fitment (40); introducing a package to the applicator machine (38); and conveying the package to a position wherein a fitment may be placed on a package and secured thereto (40).

Abstract: A fitment (6) for a package (7) is stamped out of polystyrene strips and then hot melt adhesive bonded to the package (7) so that a tab (12) portion of the fitment (6) overlies an openable flap formed by a score line (11) in the package. The package is opened by rotating the tab (12) so that the forward portion (14) of the tab pushes the openable flap into the container. Since the forward portion (14) of the tab (12) is adhesively bonded to the openable flap, when a frangible connection (18, 20) between the tab (12) and base (8) fractures, the openable flap and tab (12) can be removed to thereby expose an opening in the package. Rotation of the tab (12) is initiated by pushing downwardly on the forward portion (14) of the tab (12) in order to fracture the score line (11) of the package.
