Abstract: Fibre-retaining grooves are formed in-between a set of fibre locating pins (M) laid side by side. The pins and a base plane (4) on which they are laid are made of hard, rigid material. Guidance for connection and disconnection is provided by guide pins (G1 to G4) of larger diameter which are therefore robust enough to stand up to handling. The guide pins are in direct contact with the locating pins in order to ensure positional accuracy.

Abstract: The switch consists of an optical fibre between two plates. The end of the fibre is free to move between two positions (each opposite an external optical fibre). A section of the fibre is fixed. The region between the end and the fixed section is free to bend under the action of a switching force. The fixed section of the fibre is located in a small channel formed by two V-shaped grooves in the opposing faces of the two plates. This channel holds the fibre rigidly. The flexible region is located in a larger channel formed by two larger V-shaped grooves in the plates. The larger channel is large enough to accommodate two fibres side by side. Several such switches can be stacked into an array.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method and to apparatus for remotely measuring the distribution of a physico-chemical parameter in a medium. The method consists in exciting measurement points (20) situated in a medium (17) in succession via an optical fiber (18), with each point (20) being excited by two light pulses of different wavelengths offset from each other in time occurring simultaneously at said point, each measurement point returning radiation at a third wavelength representative of the temperature of the measurement point. The apparatus includes two lasers (3, 4) emitting different wavelengths, a delay circuit (5) for delaying the light pulse from one (4) of the two lasers, and the measurement points include a material sensitive to biphotonic excitation.

Abstract: In an optical fibre connector, the optical fibre is accurately positioned by clamping it in the channel formed between three parallel rollers each of which bears tangentially on the other two. If the fibre is of exactly the expected diameter such clamping is firm and precise, but given the variation in fibre diameters that must be accommodated there is a danger of there being excessive fibre play. This connector overcomes the problem of fibre tolerances by inserting resilient means in the said channel. Such resilient means may for example be constituted by a set of three resiliently deformable elastomer rings, one mounted on each rod.

Abstract: The pressure gauge consists of an optical fibre (1) which is enclosed and gripped by two metal ribbons (3) (4). The optical fibre is made of isotropic glass and is weakly birefringent. The metal ribbons are made of steel or steel alloys which are resistant to corrosion and other hostile influences. The birefringence of the optical fibre is such that light vibrating parallel to the direction of any pressure applied is displaced in phase from light which is vibrating in an orthogonal direction. This phase displacement is measured and used to determine the external pressure. The space between the optical fibre and the ribbons may be in vacuum in which case the absolute pressure is measured, or the space may be filled with liquid or gas in which case the difference between the external and internal pressures is measured. ADVANTAGE - Gauge is sensitive and is easy to apply to difficult practical environments.
