Abstract: An in-band/out-of-band alert delivery system for a computer system manager includes an alert log which maintains a record of alerts to be delivered and the status of those alerts, an alert manager for making a first attempt to deliver each alert, and a retry manager for making subsequent attempts to deliver alerts as becomes necessary and appropriate. The alert delivery system may also include a bus master interface manager for making in-band alert deliveries and a communications manager for making out-of-band alert deliveries. Telephone numbers are provided to the communications manager by an alert destination list. Out-of-band alert deliveries may be made via a modem, a universal asynchronous receiver transmitter, or the like.

Abstract: REMOTE SYSTEM REBOOT A remote system reboot facility effects reboots by resetting the central processing unit within a local or host console and by effecting a bus reset. The remote system reboot facility is actuated by signals transmitted over an asynchronous line from a remote console to a computer system manager within the host. The computer system manager, and possibly also a keyboard controller associated with the computer system manager, generates or generate the reset signals. Effectively, cold booting is accomplished by the remote simulating the effect of power cycling on the host and warm booting is accomplished by emulation of "control" -- "alt" -- "del" keystrokes.

Abstract: A computer system remote reboot facility is provided by resetting the central processing unit (108) with a local or host console (106) and by effecting a bus reset, by signals from a remote console (34) transmitted over an asynchronous line (104) connecting the remote console to the computer system manager (22) within the host (106). The computer system manager (22), preferably together with a keyboard controller (110), generate the reset signals. Effectively, cold booting is effected by the remote console simulating the effect of power cycling on the host and warm booting is achieved by emulation of "CONTROL-ALT-DEL" keystrokes.
