    Abstract: A thermally crystallisable glass comprises (by wt.) 55-70% SiO2, 20-30% Al2O3 and 3.5-15% N. The glass ceramic exhibits many of the desirable properties of sintered Si3N4, e.g. high strength, excellent abrasion resistance, high decompsn. temp., good thermal shock resistance and resistance to corrosive environments. Also the glass ceramic in non-porous and a max. density, unlike Si3N4 which cannot be sintered in its pure form to max density, and as it can be fabricated easily to any desired shape it find application in many high temp. engineering areas.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to the production of SiC whisker- and/or fiber-reinforced, internally-nucleated glass-ceramic matrix composite articles consisting essentially of 0.5-60% by weight SiC whiskers and/or 15-70% by volume ceramic fibers substantially uniformly distributed in a glass-ceramic matrix consisting essentially, in weight percent on the oxide basis, of 16-20% CaO, 38.5-46% Al2O3, 35-42% SiO2, and up to 10% total of at least one nucleating agent in the indicated proportion selected from the group consisting of 0.1-3% CR2O3, 0.25-3% HfO2, 2-5% MoO3, 0.25-3% Nb2O5, 0.25-3% Ta2O5, 0.25-3% WO3, and 1-10% ZrO2, wherein Al2O3 is present in an amount which is at least 5 mole percent and up to 50 mole percent in excess of that present in stoichiometric triclinic anorthite, and wherein the predominant crystal phases in the glass-ceramic are triclinic anorthite and mullite and/or alpha -Al2O3. Up to 1.5% As2O3 may advantageously be included in the composition.

    Abstract: This invention is concerned with the production of highly-crystalline, transparent glass-ceramic articles, wherein the predominant crystal phase is a beta-quartz solid solution, and which exhibit transmittances of infra-red radiations in excess of 75%, and, frequently in excess of 85%, at a wave length of 2.5 microns in articles having cross sections of about 3 mm. The articles also demonstrate excellent resistance to attack by acids and detergents, and possess coefficients of thermal expansion over the range of room temperature (R.T.) to 600 DEG C. of less than 10 x 10 7/ DEG C. Compositions operable in the invention are encompassed within a very narrow range of the Li2O-MgO-ZnO-Al2O3-SiO2 quinary nucleated with a combination of TiO2 + ZrO2. Where desired, coloring agents conventional in the glass art can be added to yield colored, transparent, glass-ceramic articles.
