Abstract: A fiber optic coupler of the type wherein first and second single-mode optical fibers, each having a core and a cladding, are fused together along a portion of the lengths thereof to form a coupling region. The fiber diameters are smaller in the coupling region than in the the remainder of the fibers. The cladding of the second fiber contains an amount of chlorine sufficient to increase the refractive index n'_2 thereof to a value greater than the refractive index n2 of the cladding of the first fiber.

Abstract: A method is described for making a low reflectance optical fiber end termination. This comprises providing a region of uncoated glass optical fiber having a predetermined diameter and a first end, and heating the fiber at a location remote from the first end. The fiber is then pulled on opposite sides of the heated location to sever the end of the fiber, thereby leaving on the optical fiber a tapered end section. The end of said tapered section is further heated to lower the viscosity of the material thereof by an amount sufficient to cause the material to recede back along the fiber and form a rounded end thereon. An apparatus for carrying out this method is also described.

Abstract: An optical fiber coupler is formed by providing a glass tube (10) having a longitudinal aperture (12). Two contiguous carbon tubes (14,15) are disposed within the longitudinal aperture which is thereafter collapsed thereon. A glass capillary tube (30) is formed by removing the carbon tubes. The tube can be stretched to form a precision capillary tube which is severed into coupler-length tubes (44). Two optical fibers (52,53), which are shorter in length than the aperture (46) of a coupler-length tube (44), are centered in that aperture. The midregion (59) of the resultant assembly is heated and collapsed about the central portions of the fibers. The central region of the resultant coupler preform is heated and drawn to reduce the diameter thereof. The end regions (77,78) of the aperture, which are not diminished in size by the aforementioned processing, function as receptacles into which optical fibers can be inserted to make connection to the coupler

Abstract: A fiber optic coupler is formed by providing a glass tube having a longitudinal aperture extending therethrough. Protective coating is removed from a region of a first optical fiber intermediate the ends thereof. Protective coating is removed from an end region of at least one other optical fiber. The coated portion of the first fiber is threaded through the tube until the uncoated region thereof is near the tube end. The uncoated region of the second fiber is placed adjacent that of the first fiber, and both uncoated regions are simultaneously fed into the tube aperture. After the threading operation has continued until the uncoated regions extend through the midregion of the tube, the midregion is heated to collapse it about the fibers, and the central portion of the midregion is drawn to reduce the diameter thereof over a predetermined length.

Abstract: A method is described in making a fiber optic coupler, in which there is first formed an intermediate produced composed of an elongated body of matrix glass, with a plurality of optical fibers extending through the midregion of the body, the fibers being fused together along with the midregion. The diameter of the central portion of the midregion and the diameters of the fibers in the central portion are smaller than the diameters thereof at the end regions of the body. First and second portions of uncollapsed longitudinal bore extend from the midregion into the end regions of the body, and respective funnels connect the first and second bore portions to the end surfaces of the body. At least one of the fibers extends through the first bore portion and the first funnel, and at least one other of the fibers extends through the second bore portion and second funnel. A hollow filament is inserted through the first funnel and into the first uncollapsed bore portion, and is evacuated, thereby evacuating the first uncollapsed bore portion. Glue is applied to the first funnel, the glue being drawn into the first uncollapsed bore portion due to its evacuated condition.
