Abstract: There is provided an illumination device having: a laser; a waveguide including at least first and second transparent lamina; a first grating device for coupling light from the laser into a TIR path in the waveguide; a second grating device for coupling light from the TIR path out of the waveguide; and a third grating device for applying a variation of at least one of beam deflection, phase retardation or polarization rotation across the wavefronts of the TIR light. The first second and third grating devices are each sandwiched by transparent lamina.

Input TIR light with a first angular range along a first propagation direction undergoes at least two diffractions at the grating. Each diffraction directs light into a unique TIR angular range along a second propagation direction.

Abstract: An eye tracker comprises a light source; a detector; and first and second waveguides. The first waveguide comprises an input coupler for coupling source light into a waveguide path and a first grating for coupling light out of the waveguide path onto an eye. The second waveguide comprises a second grating for coupling light reflected from the eye into a waveguide path and an output coupler for coupling light out of the waveguide path onto the detector. The second grating is optically configured for imaging the eye onto the detector.

Abstract: A contact image sensor having a waveguiding structure for propagating light in a first direction including, in series, a first clad medium, a first core, a switchable grating clad, a second core, and a second clad medium sandwiched by transparent substrates, patterned parallel electrode elements orthogonally traversing the waveguides, a light source, a platen and a detector. Abstract: An optical waveguide display comprises: a waveguide; a source of light modulated with temporally-varying angularly-distributed information; a fold grating providing a first beam expansion; an input coupler for directing light into total internal reflection paths in a first propagation direction: and an output grating for providing a second beam expansion and extracting light from the waveguide. The input light undergoes at least two diffractions within the fold grating, each diffraction directing light into a unique total internal reflection angular range along a second propagation direction.

Abstract: There is provided a colour sequential illumination device comprising in series: first and second light sources; a condenser lens; and a grating device. The grating device comprises at least one Bragg grating. The condenser lens directs light from the first and second sources into the grating device at first and second incidence angles respectively. The grating device diffracts light from the first and second sources into a common direction. Desirably, the Bragg gratings are Electrically Switchable Bragg Gratings. In one embodiment of the invention the light sources are Light Emitting Diodes, Alternatively lasers may be used.
