Abstract: The condition of a furnace burner is monitored by a number of detectors. The problem of deciding which detector was operated first is overcome by an electronic control circuit. This inhibits indication of an abnormal condition for a predetermined period after starting to allow operational values to be attained to eliminate parasitic effects. A control circuit (16) monitors a series circuit of interlocks (30) and also the pilot and main fuel flows. Each monitoring circuit (34) comprises a current limiting resistor (36) in series with a luminous source of an optical coupler (38). Associated indicator circuits (18,19) each containing an LED (15) remain lit to indicate cause of stoppage of the burner. These circuits respond to signals from a control circuit.

Abstract: Burner control apparatus includes control devices for actuating an ignition control means, and a timing circuit for providing an ignition timing sequence of four precise intervals. The timing circuit is actuated in response to a request for burner operation and the control devices are energized in sequence and combination in response to the actuated timing circuit. Time sequential pilot flame and main flame stabilization intervals are provided. If a signal from the flame sensor is received before the end of the overlapping flame stabilization timing intervals, the control device is energized and if flame detection signal is lost a lockout circuit is energized.

Abstract: A self-checking system for monitoring the flame of a burner is disclosed. Radiation from the flame impinges upon two photodetectors which produce two separate but comparable signals. These two signals are applied to a comparator which produces a comparison output which is then used to interpret the signal from one of the sensors so that the comparison output is removed. On removal of the comparison output signal, if the flame is still present, both sensors will once again provide the comparable signals. Thus the circuit provides a modulated signal representing alternately affirmative comparison and negation of comparison. Loss of burner flame or failure or malfunction of any of the circuit components will remove the modulated signal resulting in a failsafe alarm being instigated.

Abstract: Burner control apparatus includes a control device for actuating an ignition control means, and a timing circuit for providing an ignition timing interval which extends beyond flame detection for a timed interval. The timing circuit is actuated in response to a request for burner operation and the control device is energized in response to the actuated timing circuit. The control device is maintained energized if a signal from the flame sensor is received before the end of the ignition timing interval, and the control device is deenergized and lockout circuitry is energized in the absence of a signal from the flame sensor. Main fuel supply is delayed for the timed interval to provide pilot flame stabilization.

Abstract: A burner control apparatus for use with a furnace installation that has an operating control to produce a request for burner operation, a flame sensor to produce a signal when flame is present in the monitored combustion chamber, and one or more devices for control of ignition and/or fuel flow. The burner control apparatus comprises lockout apparatus for de-energizing the control apparatus, a control device for actuating the ignition and/or fuel control devices, and a timing circuit that provides four successive and partially overlapping timing intervals of precise relation, including a purge timing interval, a pilot ignition interval, and a main fuel ignition interval. The present invention further includes a burner control system which verifies the proper operation of certain sensors in a burner or furnace including particularly the air flow sensor. Additionally, the present system also prevents an attempt to ignite a burner if a condition is detected which indicates that the air flow sensor has been bypassed or wedged in the actuated position.

Abstract: 1459055 Burner control ELECTRONICS CORP OF AMERICA 23 Dec 1974 [11 Jan 1974] 55483/74 Heading F4T A burner control apparatus comprises a flame sensor 66 to produce a signal when a flame is present, lockout apparatus 42, 42-1, 42-2, for de-energizing the apparatus, a device 108, 108-1 for actuating fuel control means, a preignition timing interval circuit 144 and an ignition timing interval circuit 160 having a common capacitor 146 one of the timing intervals being a function of the charging of the capacitor and the other being a function of the discharging of the capacitor means 24 responsive to a request for burner operation to initiate an ignition sequence by actuating the timing circuit circuitry responsive to the actuated timing- circuit for energizing the control device at the end of the first timing interval, flame signal responsive circuitry 22 responsive to a signal from the flame sensor 66 to maintain the control device energized and means responsive to the end of the ignition timing interval to deenergize the control device and cause lockout apparatus 42, 42-1, 42-2, to lockout the burner control apparatus in the absence of the signal from the flame sensor. In operation, power is supplied through terminals 10, 12 to transformer 16 and thence to flame sensor 66. Call for burner switch 24 closes and the air flow from blower motor 28 is sensed to thus energize transformer 40 and a D.C. voltage appears at terminal 52 of full-wave rectifier 46. Capacitor 146 is uncharged and in the absence of a signal from circuit 22 transistors 98, 112 and 120 are non-conducting. Lockout switch actuator 42 is heated, pre-ignition delay capacitor 146 is charged to thus initiate charging of trial-forignition capacitor 162, and after a delay due to timing network 144, the ignition and pilot fuel are turned on 30, 32. A flame signal from circuitry 22 causes the ignition 32 to be turned-off and initiates main-fuel flow 34. If the flame signal is lost, contacts 110-2 are opened and the fuel supply is turned-off and contacts 108-1 are opened to prevent ignition or pilot-fuel flow. In a modification, the control circuitry between terminals 52, 54, Fig. 2 (not shown), is altered. In a further modification, terminals 300-, 302 are connected to a D.C. supply, which is energized in response to a call for burner, the onset of the ignition sequence being delayed by a switch 304.
