Abstract: A method of operating a radio access network (24) facilitates prioritization of up link layer 3 (L3) signaling. The method comprises making a prediction of transmission of an up link layer three (L3) message from a wireless terminal (30) to a node (28) of the radio access network. The method further comprises generating, for transmission on a down link from the node to the wireless terminal (30), an up link grant message (60) which, in accordance with the prediction, prioritizes a predicted L3 message of the wireless terminal (30) relative to messages of others of plural wireless terminals operating in the network. The method also comprises transmitting the up link grant message to the wireless terminal.

The preamble detection dedicated unit compr ises means (40) for preamble detection configured for providing Hadamard Tra nsformation of the correlation output to enable preamble detection, and all means (10, 20, 30, 40) are arranged on a single hardware chip to enable high -speed data transmissions between the respective means.

Abstract: An inherent non-observability of the thermal noise power level is circumvented by estimating an upper limit of the thermal noise power level by time evaluations. An instantaneous total received wideband power is measured in a receiver. Preferably, also an instantaneous sum of powers of all links used in the same cell is provided. A quantity (P′), preferably the difference between the instantaneous total received wideband power and the instantaneous sum of powers of all links used in the same cell, is followed (110) during a time period (TLag). A minimum value (PMIN) of that quantity is then used as an estimate of the thermal noise power level upper limit. Preferably, the time period is configured as a sliding window. An improved determination of noise rise can then be calculated and used for controlling traffic within the cell.
