Abstract: Stable tetravalent NiOOH is formed by (a) mixing NaOH, KOH, CsOH, LiOH or RbOH with Ni(ON)2 to form a mixt. contg. 5-40 wt. % alkali metal hydroxide based on Ni(OH)2, and (b) dry oxonating the mixt. The stability of the oxyhydroxide provides good capacity retention and low gassing rates which give a low degree of cell bulging. A smaller improvement in gassing rated is noted if KOH is added after ozonation. the alkali metal hydroxide is pref. 5-40 wt. % KOH, 5-30 wt. % NaOH or 5-20% LiOH. Ozonation is effected at room temp., esp. 15 degrees C.
