    Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring an operating front end accessory belt tension using a hubload transducer and a torque transducer. The hubload transducer comprises concentric rings with a strainable member disposed in a coplanar fashion between an inner and outer ring. The hubload transducer is used with a non-torque transmitting idler pulley. The torque transducer comprises a strainable cylindrical member (2009) connected to a belt bearing surface (2005) and a rotating shaft (2006). The torque transducer will transmit a torque to a driven accessory. It is used on accessories such as an air conditioner compressor or power steering pump. Signals from the hubload transducer and torque transducer as used to calculate a drive efficiency as well as belt span tensions between the driver and driven accessories.

    Abstract: The invention comprises a cog type belt having a plurality of transverse teeth on an inner surface. The belt comprises an outer extensible elastomeric layer, an inner compression layer and a tensile member. Each tooth further comprises a non-metallic or plastic transverse member, pillar or rod that extends across the width of each tooth. The opposing outer surfaces of each transverse member are inclined to each other and each end approximately equates to an outer surface of the belt body elastomeric. A compressive load between the sheaves is carried by the rod and the sidewall in proportion to the modulus of each component. The transverse members have pegs or legs that allow proper spatial orientation of each transverse member in each tooth during the fabrication process, thus assuring proper operating characteristics, including proper alignment within a pulley.

    Abstract: The invention comprises a geared drive ring coupler. The geared drive ring coupler comprises two pairs of adjacent drive rings rotatably connected to each end of a frame. Each pair of drive rings is meshed together with the cooperating pair of drive rings on the opposing end of the frame. The relative spatial arrangement of the axis of rotation of each set of drive rings is maintained by the frame, which in turn holds the drive rings in a predetermined relationship between the pulley sheaves. The drive rings on the driver pulley turn in the same direction as the driver pulley through frictional contact with the sides of the CVT driver pulley sheaves. The drive rings on the driven pulley side rotate in the opposite direction to the drive rings on the driver pulley, since they are meshed together. The driven drive rings are then in frictional contact with the sides of the driven pulley sheaves, thereby driving the driven pulley. The effective diameter or radius of each pulley is adjusted by movement of the pulley sheaves. Movement of the pulley sheaves causes the axis of rotation of each set of drive rings to move eccentrically with respect to the axis of rotation of their respective pulley. Since the drive rings are mechanically connected, the drive rings move with the frame as a unit in response to the movement of the pulley sheaves, thereby changing the effective gear ratio of the transmission.

    Abstract: A flexible drive ring CVT belt comprises a flexible drive ring having a plurality of adjacent ring segments. The segments comprise metallic or non-metallic material sufficient to bear a compressive load imposed by CVT sheaves.     Abstract: The invention comprises a drive ring CVT belt. In a CVT transmission, each variable diameter pulley has a drive ring trained around the sheaves. Each drive ring may comprise any high modulus material such as plastic or metal. An endless flexible tensile member or belt is trained between the drive rings. Each drive ring further comprises a sleeve that is trained around an outer surface of each drive ring. Each sleeve slides in a bushing on its respective drive ring. The belt has a tensile load that presses each of the drive rings together on the sleeves. The relative arrangement of the axis of rotation of each drive ring is maintained by the contact between the sleeves and the drive rings. The effective diameter or radius of each pulley is adjusted by movement of each drive ring in each pulley. Movement of the pulley sheaves causes the axis of rotation of each drive ring to move eccentrically with respect to the axis of rotation of the pulley. As the rings move, the belt moves with the drive rings and remains trained over the drive rings, giving a constant bending radius to the belt. The drive rings each may have a surface profile for use with flat belts, synchronous belts, toothed belts, multi-ribbed belts or v type belts.
