Abstract: 1156428 Low temperature cable GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 27 Feb 1967 [31 March 1966] 9173/67 Headings H1A and A4D A low-resistance three-phase power cable comprises hollow aluminium or copper conductors 1, through which a cryogenic liquid, such as liquid hydrogen or nitrogen, is pumped, each conductor being covered with insulation 7 and an outer coaxial conductor 6. In a closed system the liquid coolant is returned through spaces 15 between the conductors and the tube containing them, this tube being insulated against outside temperature by thermal insulation. The outer conductors 6 are connected to one another at intervals to reduce power losses and forces between the conductors. To prevent buckling occurring through expansion or contraction of the hollow conductors, folds or corrugations are incorporated at intervals. The complete cable is housed in a closed channel of cement or similar material so that it is free from the effects of direct current of heat from outside.
