    Abstract: To produce N2O, ammonium nitrate is decomposed in an aqueous, chloride-containing solution in nitric acid while an ammonia atmosphere is maintained above the reaction mixture. The preferred temperature range of the solution is 110 DEG -125 DEG C. The atmosphere of ammonia is maintained by introducing at least part of the required ammonia into the gas volume of the reaction vessel. The decomposition of the ammonium nitrate and the formation of N2O is enhanced by the presence of catalytically active ions of manganese, copper, cerium, lead, bismuth, cobalt and nickel; manganese, especially in its bivalent form, being preferred.

    Abstract: The process comprises (a) reacting phosphorus tribromide and oxygen in the presence of nitrogen oxides in an organic solvent at 0-120 degrees C, and (b) separating the formed phosphorus oxybromide by crystallisation or vacuum distilln. Use of solvent gives high yields of pure phosphorus oxybromide without risks of explosions, and allows reaction to be effected continuously. The solvent consists of a halohydrocarbon with a b.p. below 150 degrees C. After reaction the solvent may be removed by distilln. and the phosphorus oxybromide isolated by crystallisation, or alternatively phosphorus oxybromide is separated by distn. under 10-300 mm Hg at 60-100 degrees C. Reaction is effected at 0.5-10 atm. using 0.01-5 wt.% nitrogen oxides, calculated as NO2, based on phosphorus tribromide, and 20-90 vol. % solvent.
