Abstract: A composition suitable for treating rayon textiles to improve their adhesion to vulcanizates of unsaturated amorphous terpolymers of ethylene, a second 1-olefine and an unconjugated polyene having 3-22 carbon atoms comprises an aqueous dispersion containing (a) an unsaturated amorphous terpolymer of ethylene a second 1-olefine and an unconjugated polyene with 3-22 carbon atoms which has been grafted with acrylamide and (b) 10-40% by weight based on the unsaturated graft terpolymer of a polymethylol phenol resin prepared from a phenol or substituted phenol and formaldehyde. The polyene used to prepare the terpolymer may be an acyclic diene with terminal double bonds, an acyclic diene with terminal and non-terminal double bonds, a cyclic diene or triene or an endo-cyclic diene. Grafting may be effected by reacting the terpolymer with acrylamide in the presence of a free radical polymerization initiator in an inert solvent, e.g. benzene, chlorobenzene or carbon tetrachloride, or in an aqueous dispersion. The polymethylol phenol resin may be produced in situ in the graft polymer dispersion, e.g. from resorcinol and formaldehyde.ALSO:The yarn guides and the needles of the invenregenerated cellulose cords, yarns and threads, with vulcanizates of unsaturated amorphous terpolymers of ethylene, a second 1-olefin and an unconjugated polyene having 3-22 carbon atoms is increased by a process comprising (a) treating the rayon textile with an aqueous dispersion containing (1) an unsaturated amorphous terpolymer of ethylene, a second 1-olefin and an unconjugated polyene with 3-22 carbon atoms which has been grafted with acrylamide and (2) 10-40% by weight based on the unsaturated graft terpolymer of a polymethylol phenol resin prepared from a phenol or substituted phenol and formaldehyde, (b) drying the textile, (c) embedding the treated textile in a vulcanizable mixture of an unsaturated amorphous terpolymer of ethylene, a second 1-olefin and an unconjugated polyene having 3-22 carbon atoms, sulphur and vulcanizing agent and (d) vulcanizing the composite structure. The polyene used to prepare the terpolymer may be an acyclic diene with terminal double bonds, an acyclic diene with terminal and non-terminal double bonds, a cyclic diene or triene or an endocyclic diene. The vulcanizing agent may be 2-mercaptobenzothiazole or tetramethylthiuram disulphide. The acrylamide-grafted terpolymer may contain 0.5-5/% by weight of acrylamide. The polymethylol phenol resin may be produced in situ. As a result of the treatment with the polymethylol phenol resin and graft terpolymer the textile may gain in weight by 1-15%. After treatment with the polymethylol phenol resin and graft terpolymer the textile may be dried in a drying tunnel at 140 DEG -240 DEG C for 20 minutes-5 seconds. After step (c) a further layer of a vulcanizable mixture comprising a saturated amorphous copolymer of ethylene and propylene or butene-1 may be applied and the composite structure then vulcanized.

Abstract: Copolymers of ethene and propene and/or butene-1 are modified to render them capable of reacting with isocyanates either by heating them in an inert organic solvent, e.g. benzene, chlorobenzene or gasoline, with an organic peroxy compound, e.g. ditertiary butyl peroxide, dicumyl peroxide, dibenzoyl peroxide, tertiary butyl perbenzoate, cumyl hydroperoxide or tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, and acrylamide, methacrylamide or N-methylol acrylamide for 1-72 hours at a temperature above 50 DEG C. to produce a graft copolymer, or by heating them with an organic peroxy compound, preferably in the presence of an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, in an inert organic solvent for 1-72 hours at a temperature above 50 DEG C.ALSO:Textile materials, e.g. fibres, cords and fabrics made from natural or regenerated cellulose, silk, wool, polyamides or polyesters, are treated with a di- or poly-isocyanate and with a copolymer of ethene and propene and or butene-1 which is modified to render it capable of reacting with an isocyanate, and are then vulcanized into a mixture containing an amorphous copolymer of ethene and propene and/or butene-1 as rubber constituent. Suitable modified copolymers are those prepared by heating a copolymer of ethene and propene and/or butene-1 in an inert organic solvent, e.g. benzene, chlorobenzene or gasoline, with an organic peroxy compound, e.g. a dialkyl peroxide such as ditertiary butyl peroxide and dicumyl peroxide, diacyl peroxide such as dibenzoyl peroxide, per acid ester such as tertiary butyl perbenzoate or hydroperoxide such as cumyl hydroperoxide or tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, and a compound containing in addition to a reactive double bond, other functional groups, e.g. OH-, NH=, NH2- or -NH-CH2OH groups or a further reactive carbon-carbon double bond, e.g. acrylamide, methacrylamide and N-methylol acrylamide, for 1-72 hours at temperatures above 50 DEG C. Alternatively modified copolymers prepared by heating copolymers of ethene and propene and/or butene-1 with an organic peroxy compound preferably in the presence of an aldehyde in an inert organic solvent for 1-72 hours at a temperature above 50 DEG C may be used. The textile materials may be dipped into a solution containing 0.5-10% by weight of the modified copolymer and 0.1-20% by weight of a di-or poly-isocyanate, e.g. methane-tri-(phenyl-isocyanate-4), 2, 4-toluylene diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate or naphthalene diisocyanate, in an organic solvent, e.g. aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons, and then dried in dry air or under reduced pressure or the textile material may be dipped first into a solution containing 0.1-20% by weight of the di- or poly-isocyanate and then into a solution containing 0,5-10% by weight of the modified copolymer prior to drying. The treated textile materials may then be incorporated into mixtures containing amorphous copolymers of ethene and propene and/or butene-1 containing vulcanization agents, e.g. dicumyl peroxide, tertiary butyl cumyl peroxide, ditertiary butyl peroxide, 2, 5-dimethyl-2, 5-bis(tertiary butyl peroxy hexane, sulphur and/or unsaturated monomers such as maleic anhydride and divinyl adipate, rubber fillers, e.g. carbon black and silica, and plasticizers, e.g. paraffinic and naphthenic oils.

Abstract: An aqueous dispersion of a homopolymer of an a -olefine or a copolymer of an a -olefine with an a -olefine or vinyl acetate, in which the solid particles are positively charged, is manufactured by emulsifying a solution of the polymer in an organic solvent, immiscible with water, with an aqueous solution containing as emulsifying agent 4-20% of a salt of a weak acid with a tertiary amine of formula where R is a C8- 22 alkyl and n is 1-30, or wit a quaternary ammonium hydroxide of formula where R and n are before, and then distilling off the organic solvent. The a -olefine may be ethylene or propylene. 0.0005-10% of a polyacrylamide may be incorporated with the aqueous solution as a creaming agent and after removing the solvent for the polymer the dispersion may be concentrated. The emulsifying agent may be the salt of acetic acid with the condensation product of stearyl or oleyl amine and ethylene oxide (molar ratio 1 : 2-60). The organic solvent may be hexane or benzene.
