Abstract: The invention consists of 4-methyl-6-isobutenyl-pyrone-(2) and its synthesis by heating to 20-150 DEG C., preferably 50-100 DEG C., b ,b -dimethyl acrylic acid b -methylene-butyric acid or an ester thereof, or C1 to C8 alcohol, or b ,b -dimethyl propiolactone, with polyphosphoric acid, preferably containing 80 to 85% by weight phosphorus pentoxide. In the examples, the product resulting from the condensation stage is poured on to ice, is extracted with methylene chloride and is subsequently purified by vacuum distillation followed by recrystallization.

Abstract: The invention comprises compounds of the general formula in which R1 and R2 are each hydrogen or a C1-C4 alkyl group, n is 1 or 2, when n is 1 X is a cyano, nitrophenyl, chlorophenyl, phenylmercapto, alkylsulphoxy, phenylsulphoxy, alkylsulphone, phenylsulphone, nitrophenylsulphone, carboxylic acid alkyl ester, phosphonic acid dialkyl ester, diphenylphosphine or an acyl group and when n is 2 X is a 1,4-phenylene, thio, sulphoxy or a sulphonyl group. They are prepared by reacting a compound with at least an equivalent molar amount of a base. Specified bases are sodium and barium hydroxides, sodium methylate, potassium tertiary butylate, sodamide and lithium hydride. The reaction preferably takes place at 20 DEG to 120 DEG C. in presence of an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, and a solvent, e.g. water, alcohols N-methylpyrrolidone, dimethylformamide, dimethylsulphoxide and tetramethyl sulphone.
