    Abstract: A process is claimed for the prodn. of a sinterable, finely-divided moulding material (I) based on PVC with K value 55-90, density 400-700 g/dm3 and mean particle size 10-50 microns with 99-30 wt.% below 33 microns, 1-60 wt.% from 33-63 microns, 0-9 wt.% from 63-125 microns and 0-1 wt.% above 125 microns; the process involves homopolymerisation of vinyl chloride (VC), copolymerisation of VC with 0.5-25 wt.% other comonomers or graft copolymerisation of VC with 0.1-5 wt.% of a polymer, in acid aq. suspension in the presence of oil-soluble radical activator(s), suspension stabiliser(s), emulsifier(s) (3-16C alkyl-arylsulphonic acids, 8-16C alkylsulphonic acids or 8-16C monoalkyl sulphates) and possibly other additives; the novelty is that, after at least 70 wt.% of the VC is polymerised but before sepn. of the aq. phase, a latex obtd. by emulsion or microsuspension polymerisation of VC and contg. 0.5-5 wt.% emulsifier(s) is added in an amt. such that the mixt. contains 0.5-8 pts.wt. PVC from the latex w.r.t. 100 pts. wt. PVC from the suspension polymerisation, then the polymer is coagulated, the aq. phase is sepd. and the polymer mixt. is dried. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is useful for the prodn. of sintered mouldings, esp. separator plates for electrical cells (claimed). The orocess enables the prodn. of (I) which can be readily processed at low relative humidity without adverse effects on the mechanical properties of the separator plates (contrast prior-art processes, which also use comparatively expensive additives and involve tedious post-treatment with special equipment).

One of the polymers is a sinterable vinyl chloride/alkyl acrylate copolymer which can contain, in addition, polymerized units of vinyl acetate and ethylene. At least one further polymer is a vinyl chloride polymer which can contain up to 5% by weight of polymerized units of vinyl acetate and ethylene. The molding composition is suitable for the production of sintered, porous, flexible moldings, in particular separator compartments for electric cells.

    Abstract: A compsn. contains 15-35 wt.% of a plasticiser, 0.05-15 wt.% of a wetting agent and 100% of a finely divided, porous suspension and/or bulk polyvinyl chloride, and opt. other additives. Also claimed are the prepn. of sintered articles from the compsn. and separator plates for electric cells made from the compsn. The compsn. contains 18-30 wt.% of plasticiser and 0.05-8 wt.% of wetting agent. Mixing of the compsn. is at 60-130 deg.C, followed by sintering at 160-250, pref. 170-230 deg.C. ADVANTAGE - Allows the prepn. of highly flexible articles such as separator plates from vinyl chloride homopolymers having high plasticiser content, without needing the use of (graft) copolymers or polymer mixts. as in the prior art. In an example, finely divided S-PVC was mixed with 15 wt.% of dioctyl phthalate plasticiser, 0.5 wt.% N-cocosalkyl-N,N-dimethylbetaine and 5 wt.% of polypropylene glycol 400 at 75 deg.C rising to 110 deg.C and sieved through a 125 micron sieve. A separator plate was prepd. by sintering the mixture on a steel band at 175 deg.C for 2-2.3 mins.

The first copolymer is a specific vinyl chloride graft copolymer, of which 5 to 70% by weight are employed, relative to the total quantity of polymers present in the mixture. It contains 99.5 to 88% by weight of polymerized units of vinyl chloride, 0.1 to 11.9% by weight of polymerized units of vinyl acetate and 0.1 to 2.2% by weight of polymerized units of ethylene. The remaining polymer(s) employed is/are prepared in accordance with customary processes. Mixtures prepared in this manner produce plastisols or organosols which have a low viscosity and good stability on storage and which also enable uniform coatings to be obtained by applying a thin layer.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the suspension polymerisation of vinyl chloride, optionally in the presence of monomers which are suitable for copolymerisation or polymers which are suitable for graft polymerisation, in which, as polymerisation assistants, at least one water-soluble, organic, hydroxylated carboxylic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof and at least one other water-soluble reducing agent are used, and the polymerisation is carried out in an apparatus whose surfaces which come into contact with the polymerisation mixture have been coated with a compound derived from phenoxazine or phenothiazine. The novel combination of measures achieves a particularly deposit-free polymerisation which allows more than 30 batches to be carried out one after the other without any visible deposit forming on the apparatus surfaces.
