Abstract: Vinyl polymers with acetylacetoxy groups form the basis of polymer dispersions which are used as binding agent dispersions in paints, particularly suitable vinyl polymers are obtained by polymerizing an acetylacetoxy compound together with a least one further olefinically unsaturated compound, while using as acetylacetoxy compound an allyl ether derivative of the formula or The copolymerization is carried out in particular in emulsion at a temperature in the range of from -30 DEG to 200 DEG C. As comonomers there are used especially vinyl esters and (meth-)acrylic acid esters. The polymerization is commonly effected in the presence of a radical-forming initiator and optionally in the presence of emulsifiers and protective colloids.

Abstract: Unsaturated acetoacetic acid esters are suitable as comonomers in the polymerization of unsaturated compounds in an aqueous medium. Particularly suitable are acetylacetoxyalkyl-allyl ethers which may be synthesized in an easy manner and correspond to the formulae or Said allyl ether derivatives are especially prepared by reacting an allyl alcohol with an epoxide and reacting the resulting hydroxyalkyl-allyl ether with diketene. Both reaction steps are carried out at a temperature of from 0 DEG to 100 DEG C., preferably in the presence of a catalyst. The allyl ether derivatives may be copolymerized especially with vinyl compounds, such as vinyl esters, acrylic acid esters, olefins, vinyl halides and vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract: A finely divided polymer dispersion which is particularly suitable for the strengthening priming of paint substrates is prepared by polymerising a mixture of unsaturated monomers. The monomers used are a) from 20 to 80% by weight of styrene and/or methyl methacrylate as hardening component, b) from 20 to 80% by weight of an ester of acrylic acid and/or of methacrylic acid as softening (plasticising) component, c) from 0.1 to 5% by weight of an amide of an alpha , beta -unsaturated carboxylic acid, and d) from 0.1 to 5% by weight of an alpha , beta -unsaturated monocarboxylic acid. The polymerisation is carried out under the conditions given in Patent Claim 1. The polymers obtained have a particle size of from 0.01 to 0.06 mu m.

Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of copolymers consisting of 50-99.9% by weight of a vinyl ester of a saturated monocarboxylic acid having from 1 - 18 carbon atoms, 0.1 - 15% by weight of an alpha -haloalkane carboxylic acid vinyl ester of the formula wherein R1 is hydrogen, a halogen atom or an alkyl radical having 1 - 16 carbon atoms, R2 is hydrogen, a halogen atom or an alkyl radical having 1 - 13 carbon atom and X is a halogen atom, and 0 - 49.9% by weight of at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer which can be cross-linked while drying with 0.05% to 10% by weight calculated on the total mixture of an aminoplast resin, a polyamine, a polyamidoamine or a mixture of Formaldehyd and ammonia or an amine. The mixture of the dispersion and the cross-linking agent is stable, and cross-linking will start only when the mixture is applied to a substrate such as a fiber.

Abstract: 1357281 Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer coating compositions FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 15 Feb 1972 [16 Feb 1971] 6945/72 Headings C3G and C3P Aqueous coating compositions comprise (1) a mineral pigment, (2) a pigment dispersing substance, (3) a binder comprising an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of ethylene, vinyl acetate and optionally one or more other monomers, and (4) 2 to 20 weight per cent based on the solids content of the copolymer dispersion of a graft polymer of a vinyl ester or vinyl ester and an unsaturated carboxylic acid on a polyalkylene oxide. The binder may also comprise conventional water-soluble binders such as casein, starch and polyvinyl alcohol. The pigment may be china clay, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate, titanium dioxide or satin white. The pigment dispersing agent may be a polyacrylic acid salt or polyphosphate. Examples describe the preparation of paper coating compositions comprising china clay; sodium salt of polyacrylic acid; -ethylene/vinyl acetate, ethylene/vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate or ethylene/vinyl pivalate/vinyl acetate copolymer dispersion; starch, casein or polyvinyl alcohol; and graft polymers of vinyl acetate or vinyl acetate and acrylic acid on polyethylene glycols.
