    Abstract: 1533906 Polyvinyl alcohol/boric acid complexes HOECHST AG 2 July 1976 [4 July 1975] 27671/76 Heading C3P The water sensitivity of polyvinyl alcohol is reduced by heating a mixture containing polyvinyl alcohol and boric acid in aqueous solution, with a compound or buffer system which maintains the mixture, at a temperature of 18‹ to 28‹ C., at a pH not exceeding 7 and which, on heating only, is altered irreversibly in a manner such that the pH of the mixture is increased to the alkaline range. Suitable compounds are alkali metal, alkalene earth metal or ammonium salts of trichloro- or tribromo-acetic acid, or amine salts of these acids, e.g. sodium trichloroacetate. The buffer system may comprise an alkali metal salt of a volatile weak acid and the free acid.

    Abstract: 1408361 Vinyl ester copolymer powders HOECHST AG 4 May 1973 [5 May 1972] 21355/73 Heading C3P A water dispersible powdered copolymer is prepared by copolymerizing a vinyl ester and an acrylamide of the formula in which X is H or -CH 3 , Y is H or -CH 2 OZ, and Z is H, alkyl or acyl, each having up to 4 carbon atoms, in an emulsifier-free aqueous dispersion, and subsequently drying the dispersion to form a powder. Ethylene may be additionally copolymerized. Drying may be effected by freeze-drying, drum drying or fluidized bed spray granulation. The latter method may utilize air or nitrogen as the drying gas, which may be passed into the drying tower at a temperature of 90-110‹ C. A filler may be added before, during, or after drying. Specified monomers are: vinyl acetate, -laurate, -stearate, -butyrate and -propionate; and acrylamide, methacrylamide, N-methylol (meth) acrylamide, and (meth)acrylamide-N-methylolmethyl ether. In the example, vinyl acetate, acrylamide and ethylene are copolymerized in the absence of emulsifier, and spray dried.

    Abstract: A label essentially comprises a top layer which can be printed and/or inscribed and a water-soluble adhesive layer. The adhesive layer can also be protected by a covering layer. The top layer is formed from polyvinyl alcohol which is preferably insoluble in cold water but soluble in hot water. The adhesive layer comprises a synthetic adhesive which is soluble in water and represents, in particular, a contact adhesive or permanent adhesive. The label is resistant to the action of cold water but is soluble in hot water, and is suitable for labeling containers with a smooth surface.

    Abstract: In order to protect the environment from pollution, it is desirable to keep the polyvinyl alcohol content in waste waters as low as possible. Polyvinyl alcohol may be removed from waste waters by means of microorganisms on the the one hand, and on the other according to chemical/mechanical methods by salting-out and precipitation and subsequent separation of the solids. Advantageous is the precipitation in the form of a polyvinyl alcohol/boric acid/didiol complex, especially by means of alkaline earth metal hydroxides in an alkaline medium. Calcium hydroxide is a particularly suitable alkaline earth metal hydroxide.
