Abstract:
Glass is melted in a furnace having a melting zone and one or more processing zones adjacent to the melting zone. A volume of molten glass is caused to flow from the melting zone to the processing zone in a volume which exceeds the volume of glass withdrawn from the processing zone. The excess volume of glass is returned to the melting zone or to a separate refining zone. The furnace includes a melting section and at least one adjacent processing tank communicating with the melting section through a passage. A recirculating passage is provided between the processing tank and the melting section and additional means are provided to establish a circulating flow of molten glass via the recirculating passage.
Abstract:
In the manufacturing of high melting point glasses with volatile components, in particular of glasses from the group of boron glasses and borosilicate glasses, a furnace is provided that has a superstructure, fossil fuel burners, and a melting tank. In front of a conditioning zone and a throat leading to an extraction zone, a step-shaped raised area in the bottom is provided which is formed continuously over the complete width of the melting tank. In order to suppress segregation or, respectively, phase separation, to protect the furnace construction materials and to enable problem-free operation, a temperature of at least 1600.degree. C. is produced in the superstructure by means of oxygen-rich oxidation gas, a raised area is provided in the form of a refining bank with a step in front of it, the step being at least 150 mm high and from which at least one row of booster electrodes projects upwards, before the step, the melt flows over at least one row of bubblers located in the bottom, and behind the step, the glass flows in a highly heated state over the refining bank for a distance of 800 mm to 2000 mm, the upper side of said bank being at a maximum distance "T" of 300 mm from the glass bath surface.

Abstract:
An electrode assembly for glass tank furnaces comprises a rod electrode inserted in a cylindrical electrode holder, through which it can be advanced. Along at least part of its length the said electrode holder is fitted with a device for forced cooling and is installed in an electrode block in the furnace. In order to dispense with and in order to operate the electrode holder at a constant temperature the holder is inserted with the bottom face below a filling level determined by the design of the furnace, and provided with a seal between it and the electrode above the filling level. Preferably the electrode holder has an outer tube and an inner tube, which create an annular gap between them for a cooling medium, whereby the inner tube protrudes out of the upper end of the outer tube and a sealing unit is provided between the inner tube and the electrode.
