Abstract: A pattern is recorded on a magnetic medium by passing the medium across a master rotary element having a predetermined pattern of magnetic and nonmagnetic areas. A first magnetic heat magnetizes the medium in a first direction, and a second head that provides a constant DC field then selectively magnetizes the medium in a different direction in those locations where the magnetic areas of the patterned rotary element do not shield the medium from the field.

Abstract: THIS INVENTION TEACHES AN ASSEMBLY FOR HOLDING A TRANSDUCER-CARRYING T-SHAPED SLIDER IN COMPLIANCE WITH A MOVING MAGNETIC MEDIUM. THE ASSEMBLY COMPRISES A SUSPENSION SYSTEM INCLUDING A FLEXURE SUPPORTING THE SLIDER FOR ALLOWING THE SLIDER TO HAVE FREEDOM IN PITCH AND ROLL AND MAINTAINING THE SLIDER IN A CONSTANT YAW POSITION, AND A FLEXIBLE SUPPORTING STRUCTURE JOINED TO THE FLEXURE. THE SUPPORTING STRUCTURE BECOMES STIFF IN THE DIRECTION OF ACCESS UNDER LOAD.

Abstract: 880,054. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORTION. Dec. 29, 1959 [Dec. 30, 1958], No. 44D75/59. Class 100(1) In apparatus for feeding sheets, such as cheques of varying dimensions, to a scannning device the sheets are conveyed along a curved path by a first curved conveyer and urged sidewise against a moving side guide, and then along a second curved path by a second conveyer which is positioned to receive the sheets from the first conveyer. As shown, sheets from a separating apparatus are fed singly by a driving belt or roller 92 and a roller 93 along guides 90, 91, and between a curved guide 62 and the contiguous curved surfaces of a fixed plate 22 and a rotating drum 12, 19. When the leading edge of a sheet engages a driven roll 74 on the plate 22 and an idler roll 80 in the form of a castor, the latter urges the sheet sidewise against a shoulder 21 on the drum 19. The registered sheet is fed forward beneath a curved guide 64, between a second castor roll 86 engaging the drum surface 19, and on to the surface of a rotating drum 14 where it is gripped and held to that drum by a belt 44 which engages the sheet along the side edge opposite the edge which has been aligned. The sheet is guided smoothly from the drum 19 to the drum 14 by the tangential edge 30 of a guide flange 28 on the fixed plate 22, the tangential edge portion 65 of the guide 64, and the belt 44. The sheet is now scanned by a pair of magnetic heads 98, 99, there being soft rubber rollers 94, 95, mounted on the vertical baseplate 10, opposite these heads to help to support the sheet, and a third guide 70. The sheet is then delivered by the belt 44 and further spaced belts, such as 51, around the roller 45 and between guides 100, 101. The castor roll 80 is swivel-mounted in a post 83, is urged towards, the roll 74 by a spring; and is urged towards the plate 10 by a spring 84. The second castor roll 86 is similarly constructed and mounted. The drum 12, 19 is driven by a belt 32 which engages a flange 20 on the drum periphery and is passed over rollers 33, 34, 35. The belt 44, mounted on rollers 45, 46, drives the drum 14, and a belt 78 driven by the drum 14 drives the roller 74. The roller 74 is of nylon material, and the drum 14 has a rubber periphery 17. Provision is made for turning the whole apparatus by rotating a knob 108, but the normal drive is obtained from a motor-driven belt 104 which drives a shaft 107, from which the shafts 36 and 48 are driven. The shafts 36 and 48 serve, respectively to drive the belt 32 and drum 19, and the belt 44 and drum 17; the rollers 94, 95 are also driven from the shaft 36.
