Abstract: 1,026,440. Felt pens. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 6, 1964 [Dec. 20, 1963], No. 45262/64. Heading B6P. [Also in Division G5] A marker device for a dictation machine comprises a housing 19 containing an ink pad and provided with one or more apertures 33 and 34. The housing is inserted between two arms 21, 22 in a bracket attached to the record/playback head (not shown) and is secured in place by a detachable casing 24 (not shown). The bracket also carries a pair of plungers (not shown) aligned with apertures 33 and 34 and operable manually, Fig. 7 (not shown), or by solenoids, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown). An index strip may be inserted into the dictation machine between the housing 19 and the associated plungers which move along the strip as the record/playback head moves across the record. When the strip is to be marked, one of the plungers is operated to press the strip on to the ink pad through the associated aperture 33 or 34; a projection 37 on the housing 19 prevents smudging.

Abstract: A pivoting means for pivoting back and forth a mechanical load (24) such as a print hammer about a given axis and within a low amplitude angle includes two elongated leaf springs (14, 16). The leaf springs are located in planes at a given angle with respect to each other but both planes being perpendicular to the plane of pivotation of the mechanical load. A frame (22) fixed relative to the pivotable mechanical load is used for attaching the extremities (21a, 21, 21c, 21d) of both elongated leaf springs. The mechanical load is attached to both leaf springs equidistant from their attached extremities. A power source (30) pivots the mechanical load from its rest position to its work or print position causing the two leaf springs to be flexed in torsion. The torsion flexing generates a return torque for self restoring the mechanical load back to its original position.

Abstract: A single print hammer (19) is loaded with a selected type chip (21) transferred from a rotatable carousel cartridge (43). A single solenoid motor (35) is energized to effect chip transfer, the loading of a spring to effect subsequent return of the chip to the cartridge (43) and the loading of an energy storage spring (25) utilized to power the print hammer (19) toward a platen (13). Completion of the chip transfer to the print hammer (19) releases the print hammer (19) to be powered by the storage spring (25) until the solenoid motor (35) is de-energized. The solenoid motor (35) provides a reaction force to the storage spring only during solenoid energization. The duration of solenoid energization thus controls the impact force of the print hammer (19) and is varied in accordance with the character area of the selected type chip (21) and with the desired print density.

Abstract: A print hammer (1) for a high speed impact printer using a movable type-face-carrier, e.g., a rotatable printwheel (11). The print hammer (1) is designed to enable rotating the printwheel (11) for character selection purposes during the return stroke of the print hammer from impact position back to its rest position. While the print hammer (1)) moves in a plane perpendicular to the printer platen, back to rest position, pivotal (3) and cam means (27, 2a) cooperate to lift the hook shaped hammer head (2) up and over the printwheel (11), therefore continuously clearing the path of said rotatable printwheel.
