Abstract: Portions of a ferro-magnetic nickel-iron sheet are alloyed with copper so as to provide non-magnetic isolating regions between a matrix of discrete ferromagnetic data processing or storage areas. An 80% nickel 20% iron sheet is preferably used, and the non-magnetic isolating regions are formed by the addition of 37% to 60% by weight of copper. The selectively alloyed sheet may be apertured within each ferromagnetic area. The arrangement is produced by applying an electrolytic or vacuum deposited copper coating to a nickel-iron sheet, using a mask to define the discrete storage areas. Alternatively an apertured copper sheet may be fixed in intimate contact with the nickel-iron sheet. The assembly is then heated for a prolonged period at e.g. 1000 DEG C. so that the necessary copper diffusion into the nickel-iron sheet is obtained, and the required non-magnetic properties are acquired by the alloyed regions.
