Date Jul. 25, 1991.A disk file includes an expansion ring attached to the wall of the hub and which is located between the lowermost disk of the disk stack and the hub flange. A circular ridge concentric with the hub is formed on the ring and engages the underside of the disk. The ring is adapted so that the thermal expansion of the ring is substantially equal to that of the aluminum disk at the position of contact between the two. A washer interposed between ring and flange allows the ring to move freely relative to the flange. During thermal cycling, the ring and disk move at the same rate at the point of contact, the ring ensuring that the disks remain concentric with the hub throughout the range of disk file operating temperatures.

    Abstract: Head/arm assembly and rotary access mechanism for a disk file comprises (a) at least one planar cantilever arm (10) for supporting a transducing head (31) at or near its free end; (b) a counterweight (50); (c) an attachment means (51,54) for attaching the counterweight (50) at the opposite end of the arm (10) so that the head/arm assembly is balanced under predetermined conditions about an axis (70) through the assembly perpendicular to the plane of the arm (10); and (d) locating means (43,44,45) for locating the head/arm assembly on a rotary actuator (80) with the axis coincident with the axis of rotatkion of the actuator (80), the actuator being subject to inherent torsional resonances about its axis of rotation; the head/arm assembly being such that (e) the attachment means includes a resilient connection (54) for at least a portion (52) of the counterweight (50) such that the resiliently supported portion (52) acts as an auxiliary mass damper tuned relative to the fundamental resonant frequency of torsional oscillation of the rotary actuator (80).

    Abstract: A cantilever magnetic head support arm assembly for a disk file comprises a flat beam structure and a means of damping the structure against out-of-plane vibrations. The damping means comprises a rigid sidebar extending along one longitudinal edge of the beam structure and a layer of compliant damping material connecting the beam structure and sidebar together. Relative motion between the beam structure and sidebar causes elastic shear deformation of the damping layer to absorb the energy of vibration.
