Abstract: In an ink jet recorder, a ferrofluid ink is supplied under pressure to a nozzle to form a continuous ink jet stream. The jet stream is subjected to two or more perturbation forces out-of-phase with each other causing the satellites and drops to fast merge. Plural electromagnetic transducers are located at spaced locations along the stream and energized to produce out-of-phase perturbations on the stream. The spacing of the transducers is differentially related to spacing of varicosities or ink drops produced by first transducer. The out-of-phase perturbations can also be obtained using an electromechanical transducer and electromagnetic transducers located out-of-phase or energized out-of-phase with each other.

Abstract: Damping apparatus for minimizing print hammer settle time permits an increase in the hammer repetition rate, and in which the damping element (34) is a reactive mass which is freely movable behind the actuated element (10) to effect one or more energy transfer collisions with the actuated element. A return spring (25) applies a return force to restore the actuated element (10) and the reactive mass (34) to a rest position. A bias spring (39), having an applied spring force which is lower than the return spring (25) moves the reactive mass (34) at a slower rate than the actuated element (10) to cause the actuated element (10) to collide with the reactive mass (34) in advance of the rest position whereby the rebound energy of the actuated element (10) is dissipated and restoration of the actuated element (10) can occur as a result of the restore force applied by the return spring (25). In one embodiment, the reactive mass (34) comprises a backstop assembly movable from the rest position by a spring and comprises a pair of relatively movable damping masses (50,60) coupled by resilient energy absorbing material.

Abstract: A dot matrix printer has a row of hammer elements (10) having horizontal impactor bars (15, 16) aligned at upper and lower levels and in partial overlapping relation with adjacent impactor bars. A row of print elements (17) is also provided which alternately have horizontal upper and lower level non-overlapping impact receiving bars (22, 23) positioned opposite the hammer elements and in alignment with corresponding upper and lower impactor bars. Each print element has a dot print element (18) on one side and the row of print elements is mounted on a reciprocating shuttle (20, 21). Means are provided for actuating the hammer elements whereby selected hammer impactor bars will impact the impact receiving bars to effect transverse deflection of the print elements to form dot impressions on a print medium.

Abstract: Magnetic actuator arrangement in which the actuator or armature is retained in a cocked position by unidirectional magnetic flux having a density that cyclically varies in magnitude with time and is released by selective energization of a bucking coil to counteract the retention flux when the flux density is less than maximum. The modulated retaining flux may be made sufficient at its maximum density to retract the released actuator to the cocked position.
