    Abstract: Automatic gain control is provided for a transmission system wherein the data is transmitted in frames including one or more flag bits. Circuitry is included for selecting one of the flag bits and further circuitry provides recirculation of the selected flag bit to provide a repetitive pulse output of the selected flag bit for the respective frame of data. The repetitive pulse output is filtered to obtain a substantially DC level which is indicative of the signal energy of the frame of data and which is applied to an amplifier to adjust the gain thereof so as to maintain the data at a predetermined energy level.

    Abstract: A synchronizing clock system is provided for a multi-terminal communication apparatus having coupling connecting devices and having at least one source of information signals. The information signals are propagated along a transmission medium in one direction. The information signals on the main transmission medium are coupled from and to the transmission medium. Clock signals are provided which propagate along the transmission medium in the opposite direction to the information signals. These clock signals are coupled from the transmission medium to provide the synchronization for the system.

    Abstract: A data communication system is provided in which the data handling capacity of the system is doubled. The data in the system travels on a single wire in both directions simultaneously. Each pair of terminals associated with the communication system is interfaced with the single wire by a repeater. The repeater includes first and second directional couplers for coupling data signals from the repeater to the wire in the one direction and in the opposite direction, respectively, without substantial signal interference with signals being received by the repeater on the same wire. A wrap control function is included in the repeater which allows data signals to be placed on the wire going in the opposite direction from the received signals.

The encoding means for the data bits of information generate at least one of the encoded bits identified by a full cycle signal having an equal positive and negative excursion.

    Abstract: A multi-terminal communication apparatus controller is provided which allows information signals on a transmission medium to be replaced with new information signals at each terminal. Branch information signals are obtained from the main transmission medium by coupling without destroying or interrupting the propagation of the information signals on the transmission medium. These branch information signals are converted into terminal signals compatible with the terminal. New information signals are coupled from the terminal to a send branch line where they are converted into send information signals which are coupled onto the transmission medium. The branch information signals are phase inverted when the new information signals are provided. These phase inverted signals are applied to the transmission line so as to cancel the corresponding information signals on the transmission medium. The send information signals are coupled onto the transmission medium in the space left by the cancelled information signals.

    Abstract: A strip-line directional coupler is provided in which the volumetric size is reduced without a reduction in electrical characteristics. The input and output coupling lines are wound into separate spirals each having the same pitch so that they can be located at a fixed distance with respect to one another which is sufficiently close along their entire length to provide coupling of an input signal from the input coupling line to the output coupling line in the backwards direction. A first and second ground plane is located one on either side of and a small distance from each spirally wound input and output coupling line. A dielectric material is located between the input and output lines and between the ground planes and the input and output lines. The spirally wound input and output coupling lines provide improved electrical characteristics so as to enable a reduction of spacing of the first and second ground planes from either side of the spirally wound input and output coupling lines thereby further diminishing the volumetric size of the device into a small, flat package.
