Abstract: An electronic calendaring method for use in a data processing system that comprises a plurality of interactive type work stations (terminals or personal computers) connected directly or indirectly to a host processor. The method assists a calendar owner who receives a notice at his work station requesting his involvement in a future event that is being calendared by another calendar owner on the system, to develop different responses to the requests automatically based on criteria that are pre-established by the invitee/owner and data that is included in the invitation. The criteria may include such items as the name of the event originator, a specific ID of the event, a subject for the meeting, the place of the meeting, the time of the meeting or various combinations of the above. Responses which are automatically returned may include a confirmation, a rejection, or some qualified form of either, such as a tentative confirmation.

Abstract: An electronic calendaring method for use in a data processing system in which calendar entries that have been made for the same time span independently on two different copies of the calendar can be automatically and interactively reconciled. A method permits a calendar owner to obtain a machine readable transportable copy of his calendar on a diskette, to update that copy when the master copy is not available to him because of a business trip, for example, and upon his return to automatically and interactively reconcile the updated entries that have been made to both copies so that at least one of them reflects the correct status of calendered events for that owner.

Abstract: PROPAGATION OF NETWORK QUERIES THROUGH SUPERIOR SUBORDINATE AND PEER-PEER DATA DISTRIBUTION RELATIONSHIPS A directory database system includes a network and a plurality of directory service units (DSU), each of the DSUs providing one or more directory service functions within the directory database. For propagation of an undirected user query relative to an object in the database from a source DSU to one or more target DSUs, one of which may contain information relative to the object, a propagation (P) table is provided in each of the DSUs, the P tables being a data structure capable of determining which other DSUs to send the user query to. The source DSU examines its associated P table for the directory type specified in the query to generate an identification of one or more additional target ones of the DSUs to which the query should be directed. After propagating a query from the source DSU to those additional DSUs identified by the P table in the source DSU, there is returned to the source DSU information responsive to the user query from the one of the additional target DSUs containing the information.

Abstract: GENERALIZED DIRECTORY DATA MODEL A generalized directory data model is provided for use in storing, in a directory database, mappings of information related to names and the like, the directory data base being a set of directories containing information of a similar type. The directory data model includes a user data component; a user data descriptor component; and an operation control block component; the user data component providing a model for collection of user data elements; the user data descriptor component describing the user data component and containing data element format information, identification and allocation information, and data access control information; and the operation control block component containing information for controlling those directory system functions to be performed on behalf of a particular user, the operation control block component including search and update algorithm control information and internal tables defining the relationship of the particular member user directory with other member user directories within a particular directory database.
