Abstract: It is one object of the present invention to provide a contents data judging apparatus and method for accurately determining whether an exchange of contents data occurred from the time the data were produced until an alteration of the data was detected, for identifying an occasion on which the contents data may be altered, and for identifying a portion of the data that was altered. A contents data judging apparatus, which determines whether contents data prepared by a digital device were altered, comprises: (1) means for performing an authentication process using a medium on which contents data are recorded; (2) means for reading the contents data from the medium; (3) means for embedding, in the contents data, data for verifying the pertinent contents; (4) means for extracting, from the contents data, the data for verifying the pertinent contents; and (5) means for using the results of the extraction to determine whether the contents data were altered. Preferably, the means (5) includes means for, when the contents data were altered, identifying a portion containing altered data.

Abstract: @ A coding process for a facsimile transmission system employs block coding and dither matrices of black and white picture elements, wherein each matrix represents a portion of a subject (22). The subject is scanned to provide gray-scale tone-level data, and the data of continuous tone regions of the subject is represented by standardized patterns in matrix form. A run of identical patterns is counted in the scanning direction and a symbol incidating the number of such repetitions is placed in the code in lieu of the succession of code words representing individual ones of the repeating patterns. A second symbol is inserted into the code to indicate a succession of runs of repeating patterns in the same column now positioned in two or more rows. The second symbol is utilized in lieu of a repetition of code words corresponding to each of the repeated patterns. The two symbols provide for two dimensional compression of the length of the message for improved efficiency of transmission of pictorial data between the subject and a display of an image of the subject.

Abstract: An original image of a text document is scanned by an image scanner of a resolution of 240 pel/inch in a terminal device. The image scanner generates binary data for each pel of the image sampled at the 240 pel resolution which are stored in a input image buffer. The pel signals are selectively fetched to generate a first compressed data stream 120 pel resolution and a second compressed data stream of the remaining pels. To selectively fetch the pel signals four sampling windows are prepared. The first window fetches one pel signal, as a current pel signal being processed, stored at one of every other pel position and a plurality of neighbouring pel signals stored at the every other pel positions. The sampling points of the first window are arranged at 120 pel resolution. Second, third and fourth sampling windows are used to fetch or sample both pel signals at 120 resolution and the remaining pel signals in various combinations. Patterns of the second, third and fourth windows differ from each other and are arranged at 240 pel resolution.
