    Abstract: 1,020,968. Transistor logic circuits. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Oct. 19, 1964, No. 42532/64. Heading H3T. A logic circuit comprises a bridge circuit comprising, between the input terminals 5, 6, two diode arms 12 and 13 in series and two emitter-base diode arms 14 and 15 in series, a resistor 11 being connected across the other diagonal 9, 10. In the circuit shown, when the signals at 5 and 6 are equal no current flows in the transistors 14 and 15 so that transistor 19 is conducting. When 5 is positive with respect to 6, current flows in the path 12, 11, 15 so that transistor 15 conducts and 19 is cut off. Similarly, transistor 19 conducts when 6 is positive with respect to 5. Accordingly, the circuit performs an " exclusive OR " function. Diode 23 prevents transistors 14 and 15 saturating and diode 24 prevents 19 saturating. In addition, the charge stored in diodes 12 and 13, when conducting, provide a discharge path for charge stored by the transistors 15 and 16, respectively when the signal terminates. Fig. 1 (not shown) is a simplified circuit having the diodes and emitter-base paths reversed.

In a digital data store, each drive line is divided into two parallel paths at each storage location and one only of these paths is effectively inductively coupled to a sense line which crosses the drive line at the storage location, a bit being stored by introducing an impedance discontinuity in one of the two paths. The inductive coupling between drive path and sense line is achieved by having the conductors cross each other at an acute angle (which may be zero). The drive and sense lines are printed on respective dielectric sheets laid on top of one another (Fig. 5, not shown). As a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) drive lines printed on a first sheet are surrounded by a further sheet on which sense lines are printed. The impedance discontinuities may be introduced by punching holes in a metal ground-plane positioned beneath the pair of dielectric sheets. Alternatively, this may be done by selective deposition of a thin film of magnetic material between the ground-plane and the lines. In order to reduce impedance variations of a sense line where it crosses a drive line, dielectric blocks 13 (Fig. 6, not shown) may be inserted between it and the ground-plane of the next storage plane above. The sense lines may vary in length to compensate for the drive signal delay in passing along a drive line.
