Abstract:
An insulator housing is provided having a plurality of openings extending from the back face to the front face thereof. The plurality of openings are located symmetrical about a vertical and horizontal axis passing through the middle of the front face of the housing. The horizontally adjacent openings are staggered vertically. A plurality of extensions extend forward from the front face of the insulator housing, each extension having a vertical member and two horizontal members extending laterally from opposite sides of the vertical member, one at either end thereof. A contact is located within each of the openings and extends forward of the openings coextensive with the extensions. The location of the extensions and the orientation of the horizontal members are such that the extensions interleave with extensions of an identical connector assembly regardless of the orientation to form a guide means and protective enclosure for each of said contact members.
Abstract:
A photoengraving plate is taught having a sheet of etchable metal such as magnesium laminated to a self-supporting base structure in which the layer next adjacent and bonded to the etchable metal sheet is a non-metallic, preferably organic plastic, layer which is substantially inert to the etchant composition to be used in the photoengraving process. Preferably the metal sheet is of minimal thickness corresponding to the maximum intended depth of etch, e.g. 30 mils. An exemplary plate has a magnesium sheet bonded to an ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer layer that is bonded to a poly(ethylene terephthalate) sheet.
Abstract:
OPTICAL FIBER CONNECTOR APPARATUS An improved optical fiber connector is described in which the necessity for tight tolerances on concentricity, sleeve diameters and sleeve bores is eliminated. A housing means is provided which has a central axial cavity extending therethrough. Optically transmissive fibers are inserted into one end of the housing and extend outwardly from the other end thereof. The fiber is affixed to the housing so that the free end is at a fixed distance from a reference surface on the housing. A longitudinally slidable fiber support and shroud means surrounds and slidingly supports the free end of the fiber. Resilient mounting means contacts the sliding support and shroud means to urge it outwardly from the housing. A connector has a flared guide surface with an opening of a dimension greater than the internal dimension of the guide surface so that the free end of the fiber is guided and received within the connector. The connector has means for abutting the sliding support as shroud means and forcing the same backward against the urging of the resilient means so that when the housing and shroud assembly are brought into engagement with the connector the wall surfaces of the flared guide surface means contact and guide the free end of the fiber into accurate placement within the guide surface means.
