    Abstract: The present invention relates to apparatus for vertical magnetic recording in a magnetisable recording medium of the type comprising a magnetic transducer (14) having means (12) for generating a magnetic field and a recording gap, means for positioning the magnetic transducer so that the recording gap is in close proximity to a magnetisable recording medium, means for producing relative motion between the magnetic transducer and a recording medium, and means (10) for repeatedly energising the magnetic field generating means so as to generate a magnetic field repeatedly and produce a series of magnetic transitions in the portions of a recording medium which are positioned successively adjacent to the gap. … Apparatus according to the invention is characterised in that the means for energising the magnetic field generating means provides unidirectional energising pulses of relatively short duration so that the magnetic field is a bipolar magnetic field and the magnetic transitions are also bipolar, resulting in RZ ("return to zero") recording in the recording medium. … The invention also relates to a method of vertical magnetic recording in a magnetisable recording medium which results in RZ recording in the recording medium.

    Abstract: A current access bubble memory system includes a method and device for propagating and switching isolated bubbles within a plurality of orthogonal propagation channels. The device includes two orthogonal arrays of parallel current conductors oriented at 45 DEG angles to the two orthogonal bubble translation axes. The conductors in each array are regularly spaced a distance S apart from center to center. The first array of conductors are connected in parallel to a first current source and the second array of conductors are connected in parallel to a second current source. The propagation channels are defined by confining means to have a width d where d is the bubble diameter. The centerline of the channels are spaced a distance of about 2ROOT 2 S/8 from the center of adjacent conductor intersections. Bubble translation occurs through sequential activation of the two bipolar current sources. Use of specific activation sequences allow selective control of the bubble propagation path at channel intersections. The method provides for flexible design of memory configurations with all accessing and switching functions controllable by means of specific activation sequences of the two current sources.

    Abstract: A closed loop bubble lattice system and a method for stabilizing the same is disclosed. The closed loop bubble lattice system contains at least one portion being curved wherein the lattice parameter increases with the radius. In a preferred embodiment a radially varying bias field is associated with the curved portion in a manner to provide an equilibrium lattice constant at a bubble domain position which is substantially the same as the lattice parameter for that position. A method of reducing the stress in the curved portion of the bubble domain lattice system to provide stabilization therefor involves the step of varying one or more of the parameters which affect the equilibrium lattice constant.

    Abstract: MAGNETORESISTIVE READ TRANSDUCER A magnetoresistive (MR) read transducer assembly in which the thin film MR layer is longitudinally biased only in the passive regions by exchange bias developed by a thin film of antiferromagnetic material that is deposited in direct contact only in the passive regions of the MR layer and a thin film of soft magnetic material which extends across the transducer assembly. The longitudinal bias is developed by exchange coupling between the thin film of antiferromagnetic material and both the MR layer and the thin film of soft magnetic material in the passive regions. However, the thin film of soft magnetic material is separated from the MR layer in the active region only of the MR layer by a decoupling layer which interrupts the exchange coupling so that transverse bias is produced only in the active region upon connection of a bias source to conductor leads which are connected to the MR layer within the passive region. The transverse bias is produced in that part of the active region of the MR layer in which the bias/sense current and the decoupling layer are both present. Upon connection of a signal sensing means to the conductor leads, an output signal is sensed which detects resistance changes in the MR layer as a function of the fields which are intercepted by the MR layer.
